Best Time to Visit Lake Como
The best time to visit Lake Como is from late spring to early autumn, specifically late May to September. During this period, the weather is warm and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit. Lake Como has mainly outdoor activities so you’ll want to make sure to visit when the weather is at its best to experience it fully.
The summer months of July and August are particularly popular. Mainly because the long, sunny days are perfect for boating, swimming, and exploring the lakeside towns. However, for those seeking a quieter experience, the shoulder months of May, June, and September provide equally delightful weather with fewer crowds. We visited at the end of May and did have bouts of rainy weather. According to the locals, the seasons seem to be shifting and the great weather goes into October so that would be another great month to visit!

How to get to Lake Como?
When flying to Italy, the closest airport to Lake Como is Milan Malpensa (MXP). From there, you can take a private transfer for convenience and comfort (recommended if you have large luggage) or take an hour-long train ride to Como San Giovanni train station, the primary gateway for exploring Lake Como.
Upon arrival, you have two main options for reaching your final destination. You can hire a private transfer from the train station, or you can take the C10 bus, which travels along the west side of the lake. The towns are well connected by the bus service. While the bus is a budget-friendly option (€2.50 for a one-way fare), it’s important to note that it is not well-suited for large luggage, and you may need to stand if the bus is crowded.
How many days do you need in Lake Como?
For a trip to Lake Como, you’ll want to spend a minimum of 3 days however a 5-day trip is ideal. This ensures that you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the sights at a slower pace which is how Lake Como should be experienced. Finally, to see everything in this Lake Como Travel Guide 5 days would be best for a visit!
Where to Stay in Lake Como
The ideal location to stay in Lake Como for exploring all the popular destinations is mid-lake. While the town of Como is wonderful to visit, it is less convenient for accommodation, as it is an hour’s ferry ride from many main attractions. For first-time visitors to Lake Como, the best areas to stay are Tremezzo, Menaggio, Bellagio, or Griante, as these towns provide easier access to the lake’s highlights. Read on for my hotel recomendations below.
Finally, regardless of which town you choose as your home base, you’ll likely be taking ferries to and from the other towns. These ferry rides are shorter in duration and typically cost around €10-€15 each way. You can purchase tickets at the ferry terminals, but many smaller coffee shops and restaurants also sell them, so be sure to ask!
Best Things to Do in Lake Como
Visiting the Villas in Lake Como
One of the main things to do in Lake Como is walk the grounds to the stunning Villas around the lake. It’s the perfect way to experience the heart of Italian elegance and history. These magnificent estates, with their lush gardens and stunning architecture, offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of Italy’s aristocracy. They are scattered about across the lake towns.
Villa Carlotta
Begin with the iconic Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. This 17th-century villa is renowned for its stunning gardens, exquisite views of the lake and mountains, and extensive art pieces by Italian artists such as Canova, Hayez, and Thorvaldsen. You can easily spend an hour or two exploring the lakeside property with grandeur balconies, an exquisite gate, acres of gardens, and beautiful interiors. It’s a treasured cultural and historical landmark on the lake.
The villa’s name, however, originates from the mid-19th century when Princess Marianne of the Netherlands bought it as a wedding gift for her daughter Carlotta, who married Georg II of Saxony-Meiningen. Made it all the more fitting that we witnessed a wedding ceremony here! Finally, there is a small green drink stand to the left of the entrance make sure to stop here for an Aperol spritz slushy or boozy hot chocolate.
Villa del Balbianello
Next, visit Villa Balbianello in Lenno, perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the lake. This villa is most famous for its romantic setting and appearances in films like Star Wars and Casino Royale. The villa’s origins trace back to the 13th century when it was originally built as a monastery. There are even two towers that remain on the property today that have been around since then.
Its picturesque setting and storied past continue to enchant visitors, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring the beauty of northern Italy. Because of its popularity, it is easily the busiest villa in Como and is best to visit on a boat tour (more on that later). If you are reaching Villa Balbianello by bus or car do note that you will need to walk uphill for 25 minutes from the park to reach the entrance gate. Finally, they do offer a water taxi service from Lenno for a small fee however it does not operate on the weekends.
Cipressi and Monastero
Lastly, don’t miss Villa Cipressi and Monastero in Varenna, where serene gardens and classical statues create a tranquil retreat. Each villa has its unique charm and story and provides an unforgettable experience, showcasing the timeless beauty and cultural richness of Lake Como. These villas are located directly next to each other and you can purchase admission for both at either for a small discount.
Villa Cipressi traces its origins back to the 14th century when it was originally a monastery built by the Cistercian monks. Today, Villa Cipressi welcomes visitors to explore its gardens, which offer panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. The main attraction here is its gates that open up into the lake. While walking down to said gates stroll casually down and take in the stunning gardens. Once reaching the gates you may encounter a line as it’s become quite popular in recent years for photos. However, while waiting you can enjoy the views and boats as they pass by.
Villa Monastero is traced back to the 12th century when it was established for Benedictine nuns. The convent complex was gradually transformed into a noble residence, blending religious architecture with Renaissance and later Baroque elements. Today, Villa Monastero welcomes visitors to explore its gardens, which showcase a diverse collection of botanical species from around the world. It’s also available to access from the water if you choose a private boat tour. However, exploring Varenna at a leisurely pace is necessary as it’s a hidden gem within the lake.
Exploring Lakeside Towns
Bellagio
Bellagio is a charming town nestled at the meeting point of the Y-shaped Lake Como in northern Italy. Known for its breathtaking views, historic villas, and serene atmosphere, Bellagio has earned the reputation of being the “Pearl of Lake Como.” It’s easy to see why as this town is filled with charming cobblestone streets, views for days, and artisan shops. It’s inspired writers and artists for years and years with its picturesque qualities.
Furthermore, it’s known for its historic villas and gardens. Including Villa Melzi d’Eril and Villa Serbelloni. You can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring Bellagio. Or consider making this pearl your home base for your trip. Some of the best things to do in Bellagio are relaxing at one of the beaches, shopping at the artisan stands and shops, grabbing lunch at a seaside cafe, or indulging in gelato. The famous street viewpoint everyone photographs (including us obviously) is located in front of Trattoria San Giocamo. Finally, below I’ve listed a few places we visited to add to your itinerary:

Oh, Varenna. This romantic local gem has become increasingly popular over the years. With its colorful hillside homes, a medieval church with a Romanesque bell tower, and a town square that feels as though it’s been plucked out of Beauty & the Beast it’s easy to see why. The must-see locations when visiting are Villa Cipressi and Monastero, Bar II Molo for a lakeside meal with the prettiest views, and Hotel Royal Victoria for cocktails.

Which offers panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding villages. Furthermore, you can indulge in traditional Italian cuisine at Varenna’s charming trattorias and restaurants, specializing in fresh seafood, pasta dishes, and locally sourced ingredients. Finally, savor a glass of wine from the nearby vineyards of Valtellina, known for producing excellent red wines such as Nebbiolo and Chiavennasca.
Como
Exploring Como, the principal town at the southern tip of Lake Como, is a journey into both history and modernity. The town’s centerpiece is its stunning Cathedral (Duomo) of Como, an impressive example of Gothic architecture adorned with intricate sculptures and paintings. Nearby, the Piazza Cavour offers a charming spot to relax and people-watch amidst elegant cafes and boutiques. Visitors can delve into Como’s rich history at the Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio, showcasing artifacts from ancient Roman times through the Middle Ages, or take a stroll along the lakeside promenade, enjoying panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Lake Como Travel Guide: Menaggio
Exploring Menaggio offers a blend of relaxation, culture, and outdoor adventures on the western shore of Lake Como. This charming town boasts a scenic promenade lined with cafes and shops, perfect for strolls along the waterfront. Visitors can admire the elegant architecture of Menaggio’s historic buildings. Such as the 19th-century Grand Hotel Victoria and the picturesque Church of Santo Stefano.
Adventurers can embark on hiking trails that lead into the nearby hills and mountains. But if you prefer relaxation Menaggio offers lots of beach opportunities (more on that below). Finally, the town’s proximity to the lake also makes it a hub for water sports enthusiasts, with opportunities for boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
Private Boat Tour
Undoubtedly, the highlight of your trip will be a classic Venetian Wooden Boat Tour. I firmly believe that viewing a city from the water offers the best perspective. This boat tour was incredible, and 3-4 hours is more than enough time to experience the lake’s highlights. We cruised past Varenna, the Bridge of Nesso, and iconic villas featured in movies like James Bond and Succession. We even had time to explore the town of Bellagio on foot for an hour. The entire experience made me feel like a movie star and was a highlight of my life!
Being that we visited Villa Balbianello earlier in the day we chose Bellagio as our land excursion. But it’s best to visit Villa Balbianello throughout your boat tour to access the villa through the boat port. Make sure to book your tickets in advance. Although a boat tour can be quite pricey, the endless possibilities with your private tour is an experience that you’ll always remember. We promise that you will cherish that memory forever.
