It’s also the 10th largest city in the world! It is also known for its friendly locals, bustling entertainment districts, and iconic landmarks. This dynamic city promises an unforgettable experience for every traveler. From the ancient grandeur of Osaka Castle to the dazzling lights of Dotonbori, there’s no shortage of must-see sights and hidden gems.

An Osaka 3-day itinerary is the perfect way to explore Osaka’s diverse offerings, which gives you ample time to soak in its historic charm, modern marvels, and mouthwatering cuisine. Things to Know Before Visiting Osaka

• Public Transit is the best way to get around. Not only is it the most cost-effective, but most likely it will be the quickest since the trains run on a VERY timely schedule.
• With the above being said, you must practice Japanese etiquette when traveling on trains and in public. Do not talk loudly, do not take calls, and put your backpack in front of you when it’s a packed train.
• Add a SUICA or PASMO card to your Apple wallet before reaching Japan for convenience.
• Most of Japan is still cash-based. Especially when you visit temples and want to eat street food. Make sure to have some cash on hand at all times.
• It’s hard to find public trash cans. However, we found most of them next to vending machines. Just in case make sure to carry a small bag with you to dispose of your trash. Or just eat at sit-down restaurants.
• It’s considered rude to eat on the go. Even drinking coffee while walking can be frowned upon. So embrace the culture and enjoy your food and drinks where you purchase them.
• Tipping is not customary in Japan. Great service is provided ALWAYS and it can be considered rude to tip so don’t!
• If you are planning on visiting multiple cities, research to see if a Japan Rail Pass is worth it. If you plan on using the JR line multiple times it may be so make sure to check the JR Pass calculator before traveling.

Day 1: Explore the Heart of Osaka

Morning: Visit Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks, stands as a testament to the nation’s storied past. Built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle was intended to symbolize his unification of Japan. Over the centuries, it has endured destruction and reconstruction, reflecting the resilience of its history. It was an amazing experience!

Meanwhile, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter enchants visitors with the towering Hogwarts Castle, a ride through the Forbidden Journey, and the chance to sip on a frothy Butterbeer in Hogsmeade. The detailed theming in both areas makes you feel as though you’ve stepped directly into your favorite games and stories. Don’t miss a visit to the churro stand to indulge in your house churro. Mine was Gryffindor and it was delicious!

Osaka 3 Day Itinerary (Optional) Day 2: Day Trip to Nara

If you prefer to skip USJ and experience the bowing deer in Nara instead taking a day trip to Nara from Osaka offers a delightful escape into Japan’s rich history. Just a 30 to 45-minute train ride away, Nara is home to some of Japan’s most iconic cultural treasures. Start your visit at Nara Park, where hundreds of friendly, free-roaming deer—considered sacred messengers in Shinto—welcome visitors. You can purchase deer crackers (shika senbei) to feed them and experience their gentle bows, a charming tradition unique to Nara.

Be sure to skip the vending machines and purchase deer crackers directly from the stands within Nara Park for the best experience. To make your crackers last longer, break them into smaller pieces rather than feeding the deer whole crackers. This way, you can enjoy more interactions with the friendly deer without running out too quickly!

From the park, head to Todai-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and check out the Great Buddha Hall. Which houses one of the largest bronze Buddha statues in the world. Other highlights include Kasuga Taisha, a historic Shinto shrine adorned with thousands of stone and bronze lanterns, and Kofuku-ji Temple, known for its striking five-story pagoda.

Be sure to explore the quaint streets of Naramachi, the city’s historic merchant district, for traditional sweets and souvenirs. You can even witness the famous mochi pounding at Nakatanidou. Finally, Nara is a perfect day trip that complements the modern energy of Osaka.

Where the other museums offer immersive experiences indoors the botanical garden is unique because the museum is all outdoors. It’s described as a night open-air museum, featuring a collection of artworks that use the plants, lake, and the ecosystems and environment of Nagai Botanical Garden. As the artworks in this exhibition are influenced by the trees and birds that live in the garden, if the wildlife disappears, the artworks will also disappear.

The artworks transform interactively, influenced by the elements as well as by the behavior of the people in it, making the environment and the people a part of the works. Highlights include large immersive eggs that change color as you move them and a starry night-esque projection on a large sculpture emerging from the pond. Each exhibit is designed to engage your senses, making every visit feel like stepping into a living, breathing work of art.
