Where to Stay in Edinburgh: The Best Hotels

Foliage surrounding castle perched on a hill
Charming historic Edinburgh streets with medieval architecture and cobblestone paths for travel inspiration.

There’s something about Edinburgh that feels like stepping into a storybook. Maybe it’s the way the castle rises above the city like something out of a film, or how every cobblestone street seems to hold centuries of history. But what really makes a trip here unforgettable? Where you choose to stay.

Edinburgh does luxury differently. It’s not overly flashy or modern for the sake of it. As a seasoned traveler it’s quite refreshing. It’s layered, atmospheric, and deeply tied to its surroundings. Think historic buildings reimagined into five-star hotels, velvet-draped suites, and views you’ll never forget.

If you’re planning a trip and want that wow experience from the moment you check in, these are the most incredible luxury hotels in Edinburgh. They each come with its own personality and story!

Best Areas to Stay in Edinburgh

Before diving into hotels, the area you stay in really shapes your experience.

Old Town is where you’ll find that classic Edinburgh charm. Staying here means your steps from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. It’s lively, historic, and absolutely perfect for a first visit. Not to mention extremely walkable.

New Town, on the other hand, feels a bit more polished. Picture elegant Georgian architecture, luxury shopping, and a slightly calmer atmosphere. It’s where I’d stay if you want something refined, tucked away from the crowds, but still central.

Then there’s Leith, a bit more off-the-beaten-path, with a creative, local feel. Staying here would be best for a second or third visit to experience the more local vibe. With some of the most unique stays in the city.

While all opinions are always my own, my content on this blog post may contain affiliate links for hotels I’ve traveled to and recommend. This means I get a small commission (at no additional cost to you) if you book a stay after clicking one of these links. As always, I am so thankful for your support so I can continue to offer free resources!

Best Luxury Hotels in Edinburgh

Classic & Iconic Luxury

The Balmoral Hotel

If it’s your first time in Edinburgh and you want that pinch me moment, this is it.

Sitting right on Princes Street, The Balmoral Hotel is impossible to miss thanks to its famous clock tower. The location alone makes it one of the best in the city. You’re right between Old Town and New Town, which means everything is walkable.

Inside, it’s timeless and elegant without feeling stuffy. Think marble bathrooms, plush bedding, and that classic five-star energy. It’s also home to incredible dining (including Michelin-starred options) and one of the most beautiful afternoon tea experiences in the city.

Perfect for: A first trip where you want the full Edinburgh experience. Book your stay here!

The Caledonian Edinburgh

If you’re looking for that old-school, grand hotel moment, this is it.

Set right at the west end of Princes Street, The Caledonian Edinburgh, or “The Caley,” as it’s often called—feels like stepping back into a more glamorous era of travel. It was originally a railway hotel, and you can still feel that sense of history the second you walk through the doors.

The interiors lean classic and elegant—marble details, high ceilings, and that timeless luxury that never really goes out of style. But what truly sets this hotel apart? The views. Some of the rooms look directly out to Edinburgh Castle, and waking up to that is one of those moments that just doesn’t get old.

It’s also in such a good location. You’re right on Princes Street, which means you can easily walk into both Old Town and New Town, pop into shops, or head out for dinner without needing to overthink your plans. It’s one of those stays where everything just feels easy and close to everything!

And if you’re someone who loves a little unwind moment at the end of the day, the spa here is such a nice bonus—especially after a full day of walking the city.

Perfect for: A timeless, luxury stay with iconic Edinburgh views and an unbeatable location. Book your stay here!

Boutique & Romantic Luxury

The Witchery by the Castle

This is easily one of the most unique hotels I’ve ever come across.

Tucked just steps from Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery by the Castle feels like stepping into another era. Each suite is over-the-top in the best way. Think rich velvet, antique furniture, dramatic lighting, and details that make it feel almost cinematic.

If you’re a fan of witchery, hence the name, it’s the perfect place for you to hang your hat at the end of the day. It’s moody, intimate, and completely unforgettable. Not your typical luxury hotel—and that’s exactly why people love it.

Perfect for: Couples, anniversaries, or a once-in-a-lifetime kind of stay. Book your stay here!

Modern Luxury

Gleneagles Townhouse

If you’re someone who loves a hotel that feels cool without trying too hard, this is the one.

Tucked into St Andrew Square in the center of Edinburgh, Gleneagles Townhouse is one of those places that instantly feels like you’ve discovered something special. It’s set inside a former bank building—one of those grand, historic spaces Edinburgh does so well—but instead of feeling formal, it’s been completely reimagined into something warm, social, and honestly just really fun.

The moment you walk in, you feel it. High ceilings, dramatic columns, velvet textures, rich colors—it’s luxurious, but not in a stuffy way. More like a members-only club you somehow got access to.

And that’s actually part of what makes it so unique. It’s not just a hotel—it’s also a private members’ club, which gives it this energy you don’t always find in luxury stays. It’s popular for their afternoon tea which I would highly recommend. There’s always something happening, whether it’s people working in the lounge, heading to a workout class in the old bank vault (yes, really), or grabbing a drink upstairs.

Perfect for: Child-free couples, romantic escape for those who want to feel close to it all but tucked away from the crowds. Book your stay here!

100 Princes Street

If it’s your first time visiting Edinburgh, there’s a good chance you’ll end up on—or at least very close to—Princes Street. And honestly, it’s one of the best places you can stay.

Running right through the center of the city, Princes Street sits between Old Town and New Town, which means you’re perfectly positioned to explore both. On one side, you have sweeping views of Edinburgh Castle. On the other, you’re steps from shopping, restaurants, and some of the city’s most beautiful architecture.

There’s something really special about waking up here. The light hits the castle, the gardens stretch out below you, and it feels like you’re right in the middle of everything.

For a luxury stay on Princes Street, you really can’t talk about this area without mentioning The Balmoral. It anchors the entire street with its iconic clock tower and is one of those hotels that just defines the Edinburgh skyline.

But what I love about Princes Street in general is that it gives you options. You can go full five-star, or choose something a little more low-key while still getting those incredible views and unbeatable location. Places like Hotel Indigo Edinburgh – Princes Street and Motel One Edinburgh Princes still put you right in the center of it all—without sacrificing that experience of stepping outside and instantly being in the heart of the city.

Perfect for: Luxury traveler who has an eye for design, close to most. Book your stay here!

Prestonfield House

If you want something quieter and more secluded, this is where Edinburgh really surprises you.

Just outside the city center, Prestonfield House feels like staying in a private Scottish estate. It’s a 17th-century mansion surrounded by greenery, sitting at the base of Arthur’s Seat.

If you’re planning on staying in Edinburgh for more than two days then I would suggest splitting some time between here and one of the hotels in the city. That way you get the best of both worlds!

The interiors are rich and dramatic—think deep colors, chandeliers, and antique details everywhere you look. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, order a drink, and just take it all in.

Perfect for: A peaceful, romantic escape that still feels close to the city. Book your stay here!

Unique & Experiential Luxury

Fingal Hotel

If you’re looking for something completely different, this is it.

Fingal Hotel is a luxury hotel set on a former ship, now permanently docked in Leith. It’s elegant, unexpected, and one of those places you’ll talk about long after your trip.

Elegant Edinburgh hotel room with a comfortable bed, warm lighting, and modern furnishings.

The design leans nautical but still feels elevated and five-star. It’s also home to a beautiful restaurant, making it perfect for a special night in. Finally, one of my favorite parts of this location is it’s proximity to Dean Village.

Perfect for: A memorable, one-of-a-kind experience. Book your stay here!

What I love most about Edinburgh is that no two stays feel the same. You can wake up in a grand historic hotel one day, and the next, find yourself in a candlelit suite that feels straight out of another century.

Luxury here isn’t just about five-star service—it’s about atmosphere, history, and the feeling you get when you walk through the door.

No matter which of these you choose, one thing is certain: Edinburgh is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave—and where you stay becomes part of that story.
