The Ultimate 3 Days in Lisbon Itinerary: for a First Time Visit

Planning the Perfect 3 Days in Lisbon Itinerary

Miradouro Portas do Sol in Lisbon

Planning a city break to Lisbon and looking for the perfect 3 Day Itinerary? We’ve got you covered! Lisbon, with its unique blend of old-world charm and vibrant modern culture, is the perfect destination for a short but unforgettable getaway. Few cities in the world match the allure and charm of Lisbon. From the vibrant, tiled homes on cobblestone streets and breathtaking views from the miradouros (viewpoints) and the iconic, colorful trams that whisk you from place to place, Lisbon is a city brimming with excitement and wonder for first-time visitors.

Imagine wandering through the charming streets, indulging in delicious Portuguese cuisine, and soaking up the city’s lively atmosphere. It even has a touch of San Francisco’s vibe. 3 days is the perfect amount of time for a city break. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply in search of stunning scenery, our 3-day itinerary will guide you through the best that Lisbon has to offer.

Is 3 Days Enough Time for a Lisbon Itinerary?

Casa do Alentejo in Lisbon

Three days in Lisbon strikes a perfect balance between seeing the main sights and soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. With this timeframe, you can comfortably explore the city center, visit iconic landmarks, and even take a day trip to the enchanting town of Sintra. This itinerary allows you to wander through historic neighborhoods, savor local cuisine, and enjoy Lisbon’s lively culture without feeling rushed.

However, if you’re a traveler who loves to delve deeper into a city’s history and culture, you might find yourself wishing for more time. Lisbon’s rich tapestry of stories, from its maritime heritage to its modern artistic flair, offers endless opportunities for exploration. Spending a few extra days would allow you to uncover hidden gems, take additional day trips, and truly immerse yourself in the local way of life.

When to Visit Lisbon

The best time to visit Lisbon largely depends on your preferences and what you hope to experience. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal, offering mild weather and fewer crowds. These shoulder seasons provide a pleasant climate for sightseeing and often come with the bonus of lower prices on accommodations and flights.

Summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season, characterized by warm weather and long, sunny days. While this is a fantastic time for beach outings and outdoor activities, be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices. Conversely, winter (December to February) sees cooler temperatures and fewer tourists, making it a great time to find deals and enjoy a quieter city.

If your visit coincides with specific events, you can experience Lisbon’s vibrant cultural scene. The Lisbon Festival in March and the Rock in Rio Lisboa music festival in May are just a couple of examples of the city’s lively event calendar.

Things to Know Before Visiting Lisbon

Rossio Square in Lisbon
  • Lisbon is well known for its steep hills and cobblestone streets. Make sure to bring very comfortable walking shoes with a good grip. Along with the hills, it can be a rather wet climate and the cobblestones will become very slippery.
  • Shoulder season is a beautiful time to visit. We visited in September and would highly recommend the same for you.
  • You don’t need a car when visiting Lisbon. We mainly used Uber, which was very affordable. Lisbon also has an efficient public transport system, including trams, buses, and metro lines. Purchase a Viva Viagem card for convenient access to all modes of transport.
  • Many local shops and businesses may close for a few hours in the afternoon. Plan your shopping and activities accordingly.
  • Like many tourist destinations, Lisbon has its share of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like trams and popular attractions. Keep your belongings secure.
  • Consider joining a walking tour to get a local perspective on Lisbon’s history, culture, and hidden gems. Free walking tours are also available and provide a great introduction to the city.
  • Have small bills and coins on hand for taking public transportation as they only accept cash.
  • While Portuguese is the official language, English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few basic Portuguese phrases can enhance your experience.
    • Bom Dia (Good Morning)
    • Boa Tarde (Good Afternoon)
    • Bonne Nuit (Good evening)
    • Ola (Hello)
    • Obrigado (Thank You), however, if you’re a woman you say Obrigada.
    • Praia (beach)
    • Miradouro (viewpoint)

Day 1: Exploring Central Lisbon

While all opinions and recommendations are always my own, my content on this blog post may contain affiliate links for hotels I’ve traveled to, tours I’ve completed, and products I recommend. This means I get a small commission (at no additional cost to you) if you book a stay or purchase a product after clicking one of these links. As always, I am so thankful for your support to continue offering free resources.

Morning Praça do Comércio

Kick off your trip with a rooftop breakfast at Lumi rooftop in the Bairro Alto neighborhood. They have a fabulous brunch special at €27 per person which includes a cocktail, an all-you-can-eat buffet, and a menu item. The views of the city will excite you to explore more of it. Right across the way from this rooftop is Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. A great place to stop and enjoy the stunning views of the city.

Next, visit Praça do Comércio, one of the oldest squares in Europe. Bustling with shops and vendors, it’s the perfect place to start your trip. Stroll around this historic square and enjoy the scenic riverside view. From there, head up Rua Augusta, a lively pedestrian street filled with shops and street performers. Don’t miss the chance to try a delicious Pastel de Nata, Portugal’s iconic egg tart pastry, while you’re there.

On your walk up to Rossio Square take a stop at Elevador de Santa Justa. This iconic lift for panoramic views of the city and connects the two neighborhoods of the Baixa area to the higher Bairro Alto neighborhood. We would recommend coming to see this as you pass through the area, but not necessarily using the lift itself. If you do decide to take the life, the tickets cost €5.

Afternoon

Start your afternoon exploring the vibrant Baixa District, the heart of Lisbon. Begin with a visit to Rossio Square, one of the city’s main squares, bustling with activity and rich in history. Take your time to admire the intricate patterns of the traditional Portuguese pavement and the impressive fountains. From there, wander through the nearby squares, each offering its unique charm and atmosphere.

A short walk away lies the Carmo Convent, where you can immerse yourself in the haunting beauty of its Gothic ruins. This open-air museum, with its roofless nave and stunning arches, tells a story of resilience and history that is sure to captivate any visitor.

For a leisurely lunch make your way to the chic district of Chiado. Choose from a variety of dining options, whether you’re in the mood for a traditional Tasca with authentic Portuguese flavors or a modern eatery offering contemporary cuisine. After your meal, continue your journey by exploring Bairro Alto, a bohemian neighborhood known for its vibrant nightlife and charmingly narrow streets. Stroll through this area, soaking in the eclectic mix of street art, local shops, and lively bars.

Don’t forget to take a ride on the Elevador da Bica, a funicular that offers a unique perspective of the city’s hilly landscape, connecting you to even more of Lisbon’s captivating sights and sounds. The ride costs €3.80 and allows two trips – up the hill and back down, or down and then back up, on the same day. It’s an iconic way to experience Lisbon as it was deemed a national monument back in 2002.

Evening

Miradouro Portas do Sol in Lisbon

Start your evening at the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, where you can take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon’s historic Alfama district as the sun sets. It was our favorite view in Lisbon and has a small cafe at the top of the viewpoint. Here you can indulge in the famous Ginjinha drink and take in the views. Directly next door is another famous Miradouro de Santa Luiza. This one is bustling with live performers and travelers waiting for a beautiful sunset.

From there, head down to Alfama for a delightful dinner, savoring the rich and diverse flavors of Portuguese cuisine at a cozy local restaurant. After indulging in mouth-watering dishes, immerse yourself in the soulful sounds of traditional Fado music. Experience a live performance in one of Alfama’s charming bars, where the poignant melodies and heartfelt lyrics capture the essence of Portuguese culture. This captivating blend of scenic vistas, culinary delights, and musical heritage will make your night in Alfama truly unforgettable.

Day 2: Belém and Alfama

Morning

Begin your day in Belém with a delicious breakfast, savoring a freshly baked pastel de nata from the renowned Pastéis de Belém. There is always a long line but believe us, it’s well worth it. After enjoying this iconic Portuguese pastry, take a short stroll to the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, a stunning example of Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

You will most likely have to wait to get in as they limit the number of people in at a time. While it can be frustrating to wait 30 minutes to an hour, it’s incredibly enjoyable to explore its intricate details and historical significance with few people inside. We highly recommend this spot and it’s best to book your tickets in advance. The monastery is also the final resting place of Vasco da Gama, a key figure in Portuguese history whose explorations during the Age of Discovery are commemorated at the Padrão dos Descobrimentos.

Finally, walk over to the nearby Belém Tower. This historic 16th-century fortress, also a UNESCO site, offers breathtaking views over the Tagus River, making it a perfect spot to reflect on the rich maritime history of Portugal. Climb to the top for panoramic vistas of the river and surrounding area, and step into the tower’s past as a gateway to Lisbon and a defensive stronghold.

Afternoon LX Factory + Tram 28

Ler Devagar Bookstore
Tram 28 in front of Lisbon Cathedral

Spend your afternoon exploring the creative and vibrant LX Factory, a hub of artistic and cultural activity in Lisbon. Begin your visit at the enchanting Ler Devagar bookstore, where you can lose yourself among the towering shelves of books and marvel at the unique artistic installations that adorn the space. Afterward, enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the many enticing restaurants within the LX Factory.

Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Portuguese fare at A Praca, fresh sushi at Sushi Factory, or delectable burgers at Burger Factory, you’ll find a variety of dining options to satisfy your cravings. The eclectic atmosphere and diverse culinary offerings make the LX Factory a must-visit destination for both book lovers and food enthusiasts.

Return to central Lisbon and hop on a tram to the historic Alfama district, the oldest neighborhood in the city. Begin your visit at the Lisbon Cathedral, an architectural gem that stands as one of the oldest buildings in Lisbon, with its impressive Romanesque facade and serene interior. Don’t miss the iconic Tram 28 drive past and be careful when snapping photos too close as the tram is on a designated track.

After admiring the cathedral, make your way to the nearby São Jorge Castle. This iconic castle offers a fascinating glimpse into Lisbon’s past and provides spectacular panoramic views of the city from its ancient ramparts. Wander through the castle grounds, explore its towers, and take in the breathtaking vistas that stretch out over the rooftops of Lisbon and the sparkling Tagus River beyond.

Evening Rooftop Bar + Dinner

Unwind after a day of exploring by heading to one of Lisbon’s many rooftop bars, where you can relax with a refreshing drink while enjoying stunning views over the city. A perfect choice is the Limão Rooftop Bar, located atop the H10 Duque de Loulé hotel. As the sun sets, the panoramic views of Lisbon’s skyline become even more mesmerizing. Creating a serene and picturesque backdrop. Sip on crafted cocktails or a glass of fine Portuguese wine as you take in the warm glow of the sunset, but take it from us and skip the food here. Instead make reservations at the prettiest restaurant in Lisbon, Leonetta.

3 Day Lisbon Itinerary – Day 3: Sintra Day Trip

Stunning Architecture of the Monserrate Palace in Sintra

For your final day in this travel guide start your morning with a traditional Portuguese breakfast – coffee and a pastel de nata. Finally, a trip to Lisbon wouldn’t be complete without one of the best day trips to the enchanting town of Sintra. Just a short train ride from the city, Sintra is a fairytale destination known for its stunning palaces, lush gardens, and mystical charm. Explore the majestic Pena Palace with its colorful, romantic architecture and panoramic views, or wander through the enigmatic Quinta da Regaleira with its winding tunnels and symbolic structures. The Ultimate Day Trip to Sintra: A Perfect Fairytale Town

Evening

For your last evening, you can enjoy a Michelin star dinner at Alma Lisbon which has been awarded 2 Michelin Stars. This high-end restaurant has avant-garde local meat & seafood dishes, plus an extensive wine list.
With that being said it’s best to make a reservation here!
