Mendocino is one of those destinations that will leave an imprint on your heart. This charming coastal town feels as though it’s straight out of a romance novel. With endless turqouise ocean views, lighthouses, victorian architecture, and the cutest wildlife, this destination will have you wanting to return over and over again. We recently spent 48 hours on the coast and while we could have stayed longer, it was the perfect amount of time to explore.
This was my first time truly exploring Northern California. I’d never been north of San Francisco before (and yes, I just recently learned the difference between the Northern and Central California coast… don’t come for me!). But it’s safe to say I’ve officially fallen in love with this dreamy stretch of the state. In this guide, I’m sharing all the best things to do in Mendocino—from breathtaking hikes and charming local eateries to the coziest places to stay.

Russian Gulch State Park

After spending time at Russian Gulch State Park, I can confidently say it’s my favorite state park in all of California. Tucked along the Mendocino Coast, it feels like something out of a postcard. With rugged cliffs lined with cypress trees, crystal-clear turquoise water, and wildlife peeking out at every turn. It’s no wonder this place has been on my vision board for years!
The park is a dream for hikers, with trails that wind through redwood groves and along dramatic ocean bluffs. One of the most popular routes is the Russian Gulch Waterfall Loop, a scenic trail that leads to a charming 36-foot cascade tucked deep in the forest.
Day use is $9, and if you’re hoping to snap that iconic view of the arched bridge, be sure to pull off to the right just after entering the park. There’s a lovely picnic area with the perfect vantage point. Whether you’re here to hike, picnic, or simply breathe in that salty coastal air, Russian Gulch is pure California magic.
Mendocino Headlands

The rugged beauty of Mendocino Headlands State Park is just steps from downtown, making it one of the most convenient spots to explore. Perched along dramatic coastal cliffs, the headlands offer a network of scenic trails that wind along the edge of the Pacific. Delivering nonstop views of crashing waves, sea arches, wildflowers, and the town’s charming historic rooftops (and water towers) in the distance.
Whether you’re in the mood for a quick seaside stroll or a longer coastal hike, there’s something for everyone here. The Bluff Trail is a favorite, stretching along the coastline with panoramic ocean views. For something more relaxed, the southern section of the headlands offers peaceful overlooks and access to hidden coves that feel worlds away from the bustle of town. We enjoyed the most beautiful sunset here.
It’s the perfect way to start or end your day in Mendocino. Just grab a coffee from Goodlife Cafe and hit the trail for a dose of wild Northern California magic!
Point Cabrillo Station

Visiting the Point Cabrillo Light Station was easily one of our favorite experiences in Mendocino. To get there, you can choose between a paved path or a more rugged trail that hugs the coastline. We chose the scenic coastal route, and it did not disappoint. The trail was fairly easy and led us through windswept bluffs and cypress trees, with nonstop views of the ocean.
As we reached the lighthouse, we were greeted by crashing waves and some of the most picturesque coastal views I’ve ever seen. It truly felt like something out of a dream. The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse itself is full of history, dating back to 1909. When it was built to help guide ships navigating the rocky shores of the Pacific. Today, it’s beautifully preserved and still functioning, offering a glimpse into California’s maritime past.
It’s free to enter, has free parking, and offers restrooms as well. There are even cottages you can rent if you’d like to stay overnight! Whether you’re a history lover, a photographer, or just in search of a peaceful coastal walk, this stop is an absolute must.
Stroll around Downtown Mendocino

The most charmingly preserved Victorian neighborhood I ever did see. Wandering through this tiny town (it only takes about an hour to cover the three main streets!). It felt like stepping straight back in time. I was in awe of the beautifully maintained Victorian architecture, all set against a backdrop of sweeping coastal views. I’m convinced the Northern California coast is hands down the prettiest in the U.S.!
Whether you’re popping into local boutiques, tasting your way through cozy cafés, or treating yourself to something sweet from one of the chocolate shops. Spending a slow, scenic day in Mendocino is pure magic.
Visit Fort Bragg
Fort Bragg is a charming coastal town with a laid-back vibe and stunning ocean views. The Glass Beach is a must-see, where colorful sea glass covers the shoreline. The downtown filled with quirky shops, cozy cafés, and local art galleries. Head to Noyo Harbor for fresh seafood and watch the boats come and go.
Nestled just 3 miles north of Fort Bragg in Mendocino County, MacKerricher State Park is a coastal gem along California’s rugged shoreline. Spanning 9 miles of scenic coastline, this park is a dream for nature lovers, offering everything from sandy beaches and rocky coves to tide pools, wetlands, windswept dunes, and even a freshwater lake—all wrapped in lush forest and wild headlands.
Skunk Train
If you haven’t experienced the Skunk Train yet, what are you waiting for? This charming little train chugs its way through some of Northern California’s most stunning redwood forests. Giving you a totally unique way to soak in the scenery. The vintage vibe of the train cars are complete with open air cars. You can even stop at a speakeasy in the woods on the weekends. Picture fire pits, beers, and good times!
Whether you choose the full route or a shorter trip, the Skunk Train is a nostalgic, peaceful escape that perfectly complements the rugged beauty of the Mendocino coast. Trust me, it’s one of those experiences you’ll want to savor again and again.
Sunset Van Damme State Beach
Just three miles south of Mendocino along iconic Highway 1, Van Damme State Park is a coastal escape that feels straight out of a fairytale. This spot is a beautiful blend of stunning ocean views and serene forest trails. Where you can spend your morning strolling the driftwood-strewn beach and your afternoon wandering through fern canyons and towering redwoods. It’s especially beautitul at sunset. Finally, they have year-round camping available. It’s the perfect place to slow down and soak in the natural beauty of California’s rugged North Coast.
Jug Handle State Natural Reserve

Jug Handle State Natural Reserve is one of those hidden gems that perfectly captures the wild, untouched beauty of Northern California. Just a short drive from Fort Bragg, this park offers a fascinating blend of coastal cliffs, forest trails, and even a unique ecological staircase. Also, a series of distinct plant communities stacked like steps.
Hiking here feels like stepping into a natural time capsule, with stunning ocean views on one side and towering redwoods on the other. Whether you’re exploring the bluff trails or wandering through the pygmy forest, Jug Handle offers a peaceful escape where you can really connect with nature.
Mendocino Botanical Garden
If you want to truly soak in the natural beauty of Northern California, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens should be at the top of your list. Spread across 47 acres between Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean, this coastal oasis feels like a secret garden with its stunning variety of plants set against dramatic ocean cliffs, peaceful wetlands, and quiet forests.
Started back in 1961 by Ernest and Betty Schoefer, who had a real passion for growing rhododendrons in this mild coastal climate, the Gardens have blossomed into a vibrant nonprofit filled with everything from camellias and conifers to dahlias and begonias. Fun fact: it’s home to the largest collection of camellia species on the West Coast—and an impressive Heath and Heather collection too.
Whether you’re a plant lover, a photographer chasing the perfect shot, or just someone craving a peaceful place to wander and reset, this botanical gem offers a truly unforgettable escape into nature’s beauty.
Where to Eat in Mendocino?

When it comes to eating in Mendocino, there are a few spots you absolutely can’t miss. Luna Trattoria is a cozy Italian restaurant tucked away on Ukiah Street, where you can savor handmade pasta and classic dishes while dining in a charming garden patio. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner, so definitely make a reservation if you can.
For a more casual but equally delicious option, GoodLife Cafe & Bakery is a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. We enjoyed lunch there and their sandwiches were so big we were able to save half for later. Their freshly baked pastries, hearty sandwiches, and vegan-friendly options make it the best place to start your day.
And when you’re ready to unwind after exploring, Patterson’s Pub offers a laid-back vibe with tasty comfort food. Make sure to try the french dip sandwich and meatloaf. We were blown away by the quality of food and overall laid-back vibes, Finally, we smelt the chocolate from down the block at the Chocolate Haus and can confirm that everything we tried was DELECTABLE.
