An Ultimate Guide to The Best Things to Do in Todos Santos

Baja Californias Hidden Gem: A Boho Chic Escape

Nestled along the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, Todos Santos is one of those rare places that effortlessly blends surf, soul, and style. Designated as a Pueblo Mágico (or “magical town”) by the Mexican government, this bohemian gem is equal parts coastal paradise and cultural haven. Think golden beaches with rolling waves, cobblestone streets lined with art galleries, organic cafes tucked beneath blooming bougainvillea, and a creative energy that’s impossible to ignore.

You can travel along the same dark desert highway as The Eagles once sang about in Hotel California, because guess what? That infamous one is located in Todos Santos. Whether you’re chasing the perfect wave, browsing artisan markets, or simply craving a slower pace of life, Todos Santos is the perfect spot to unwind and soak up its laid-back charm. It’s the kind of destination that feels like a well-kept secret. And after one visit, you’ll wonder why you didn’t come sooner.

While all opinions and recommendations are always my own, my content on this blog post may contain affiliate links for hotels I’ve traveled to, tours I’ve completed, and products I recommend. Things to Know before Traveling to Todos Santos

Hike in Todos Santos with stunning views
  • Location: Todos Santos is located on the Pacific side of the Baja California Sur peninsula, about 1.5 hours north of Cabo San Lucas and 1 hour south of La Paz.
  • Best Time to Visit: November through April offers sunny skies, cooler temps, and whale-watching season. Summers are hotter but less crowded.
  • The Vibe: Bohemian, artsy, and refreshingly laid-back. Think surf town meets desert oasis with a creative twist.
  • Getting There: Fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) or La Paz Airport (LAP). Rent a car and enjoy a scenic drive along Highway 19
  • Driving Tips: a 4×4 or SUV is highly recommended — many roads are unpaved or bumpy, especially near beaches and remote stays
  • Why It’s Different from Cabo: fewer resorts, no spring break crowds with more focus on art, nature, wellness, and authenticity
  • Currency & Tipping: Mexican pesos are preferred, though USD is accepted in many places. Standard tipping: 10% at restaurants, small tips for service providers
  • Safety & Solo Travel: Generally safe and welcoming, even for solo travelers with a walkable town center, friendly locals, low-key nightlife

Stroll the Historic Town Center

One of the best ways to soak in the charm of Todos Santos is by simply wandering its vibrant downtown. The cobblestone streets are lined with colorful colonial buildings in sun-washed hues, each one seemingly more photogenic than the last. You’ll find eclectic art galleries, locally-owned boutiques, and hidden courtyards that invite you to linger a little longer.

Don’t miss a stop at the town square — it’s the heart of the community — where you’ll spot the beautiful Mission Church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar. A peaceful reminder of the town’s rich history and cultural roots. Along with that, the canyon views next to the church are nothing short of spectacular. Especially at golden hour. Whether you’re shopping for artisan treasures or just taking in the creative energy, downtown Todos Santos is where the magic in this town truly begins.

Explore the Local Art Scene

Art lovers will feel right at home in Todos Santos, and Galería de Todos Santos is the perfect place to start. Tucked away in a tranquil courtyard, this longtime gallery showcases a curated mix of contemporary Mexican and international artists. From vivid paintings to intricate sculptures.

Beyond just browsing, the town’s creative spirit comes to life through seasonal workshops and artist residencies. Where visitors can engage with the community and even create something of their own. If your visit aligns, don’t miss the Todos Santos Art Walk held on select Thursday evenings during high season. Galleries open their doors late, the streets come alive with music, and you can sip wine while mingling with artists under the stars.

Visit the Famous Hotel California

No trip to Todos Santos is complete without a stop at the Hotel California — yes, that Hotel California (or so the rumors say). While it’s never been officially linked to the Eagles’ famous song, the mystery definitely adds to its charm. The hotel itself has been around since the 1940s and still holds onto its vintage, slightly surreal vibe with bold colors, arched doorways, and whimsical decor around every corner. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth popping in for a margarita on the patio and snapping a few photos. The facade alone is iconic and totally Instagram-worthy.

Afternoon at Oystera

ceviche and mojitos at Oystera Restaurant

If you’re looking for a lively afternoon spot in Todos Santos, Oystera is the place. Housed in a beautifully restored old sugar factory, the space itself is full of history. With exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and a spacious open-air courtyard that feels both industrial and tropical at once.

They serve up fresh oysters, ceviche, and craft cocktails that taste like vacation in a glass. But what really makes it special is the vibe — think upbeat music, a fun crowd, and on weekends, a live DJ spinning under the palms. It’s an all-encompassing experience where you come for a quick bite and end up staying for hours, soaking in every corner of the space. Whether you’re sipping rosé or dancing between courses, Oystera brings the Magico energy in all the right ways!

Enjoy Farm-to-Table Dining

One of my favorite things about Todos Santos is the incredible farm-to-table dining scene. This town is serious about fresh, local ingredients — from just-caught seafood to organic produce grown right down the road. A few standout spots? Tequila’s Sunrise is a classic for Baja-style eats and their famous Damiana margaritas.

Hierbabuena is a dreamy outdoor garden restaurant where nearly everything on your plate is grown steps away from your table. And Jazamango, led by acclaimed chef Javier Plascencia, is a must-visit for creative Baja cuisine with a view of the surrounding farmland. If you’re heading a bit outside of town, Agricole Cocina de Campo is another gem. Tucked next to a market and bakery, serving delicious seasonal dishes in the middle of the countryside. Trust me, you’ll want to come hungry.

Visit Playa Cerritos + Las Palmas

If you’re craving beach days with a side of surf, Playa Cerritos is the spot to be. It’s famous for its beginner-friendly waves, making it perfect whether you’re just learning to catch your first wave or looking to sharpen your skills. There are plenty of surf schools and board rentals right nearby, so you can easily jump in without any fuss. After a day on the water, the beach bars are the perfect place to unwind with a cold drink and watch the sun melt into the Pacific.

For something a little more secluded, Playa Las Palmas feels like a hidden oasis surrounded by swaying palm groves. It’s peaceful, quiet, and ideal for a relaxing picnic or some serious sunbathing. Both beaches have their own unique charm — whether you’re chasing waves or soaking in the serene vibes, you really can’t go wrong.

Watch Whales (Seasonal)

If you visit Todos Santos between November and March, you’ll find the waters off the Baja Peninsula alive with migrating whales. Each year they migrate 6,000 to give birth in the warm water of the Baja Peninsula. This season offers incredible opportunities to see these majestic creatures just offshore. I recommend doing your research when it comes to booking tours to make sure they are ethical. We recommend this particular tour company.

Humpback Whales are most active from November to January, famous for their dramatic breaches and haunting songs. And Gray Whales Usually arrive around mid-January and stick around through mid-March, often spotted with their calves and showing curious behavior. We stayed at the Kimpton Mas Olas Resort and saw whales from our rooftop. It was such a magical moment witnessing these beautiful creatures from afar!

Hike Punta Lobos

hike in Todos Santos Mexico with stunning views

If you’re looking for a scenic hike, Punta Lobos is a must! The trailhead is a bit off the beaten path—you’ll need to drive down a dirt road marked by an old, abandoned building near Hotel San Cristóbal. The hike itself takes about 30 minutes uphill to reach the viewpoint, where you’re rewarded with breathtaking ocean views and the most gorgeous blue water. Surrounded by cacti, it’s one of the prettiest hiking viewpoints I have ever seen. Maybe it’s because we even caught some baby whales off the coast and it was just such a magical moment!

The hike back is an easy, mostly downhill 30-minute stroll, making it totally doable even if you’re not a seasoned hiker. It’s a peaceful way to experience the coastline and take in some of the town’s authentic charm.

Take a Yoga or Wellness Class

If you’re in the mood to slow down and reconnect while in Todos Santos, I highly recommend dropping into a local yoga class. The town has a laid-back wellness vibe that naturally lends itself to movement and mindfulness. Cuatro Vientos is a beautiful open-air studio right in town that offers daily classes for all levels — think ocean breeze, flowing sequences, and the occasional sound bath.

If you’re staying longer, there are also plenty of retreats and workshops throughout the year that draw people from all over the world. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just want to stretch it out after a surf session, practicing in Todos Santos feels extra grounding.

Go Shopping in Local Boutiques

Shopping in Todos Santos is such a fun way to connect with the town’s creative side. You’ll find everything from handmade jewelry and woven textiles to locally crafted surf gear, ceramics, and art — all with that effortless Baja flair.

A few favorites to pop into: Nomad Chic for curated boho fashion and home goods, Etnica for artisan-made pieces with a modern twist, and Bésame Mucho Bazar, a whimsical boutique inside a former hacienda that feels like stepping into a Wes Anderson film.

Don’t skip the local markets either especially the Cielito Lindo Market in downtown. It’s an open-air delight with colorful stalls, charming installations, and plenty of photo-worthy spots. All while supporting local makers. Do be warned that the prices here are more tourist prices and they were not willing to negotiate. However, they had beautiful artisan goods.

Day Trip to La Paz

If you have a little extra time while in Todos Santos, I highly recommend taking a day trip to La Paz. It’s just about an hour and fifteen minutes away and totally worth the drive for the gorgeous waterfront malecón, vibrant street art, and of course—those dreamy turquoise beaches.

You can spend the day swimming at Playa Balandra or grabbing fish tacos with a view of the bay. It has a totally different vibe from Todos Santos. It’s more lively, a bit more local while offering a beautiful contrast to the slow-paced magic of the pueblo. Planning to go? I’ve got a full guide to La Paz that covers what to do, where to eat, and the best beaches…

Where to Eat in Todos Santos?

Breakfast + Cafes

Coffee cafe in Todos Santos Mexico

If you’re anything like me, a morning (or mid-afternoon) coffee pit stop is essential — and Todos Santos delivers in the most delightful way.

  • La Ballena Blanca is one of my favorites: a cozy café with a minimalist, art-filled vibe with delicious smoothies and breakfast burritos to go. They are located outside of downtown and is the perfect stop to re-fuel after your Punta Lobos hike.
  • Sr. Beans Cafetería The Original feels like a little local institution — bright, friendly, and all about community. Their espresso drinks are strong, the baked goods are made in-house, and there’s a laid-back patio perfect for people-watching while your latte works its magic.
  • Cafe de Todos Santos a beloved café and casual restaurant situated at Calle?Centenario?33 in the heart of dowtown Todos?Santos. It’s a laid-back local favorite known for its sunny outdoor patio draped in bougainvillea, offering both indoor and al fresco seating from breakfast through dinner.

Lunch + Dinner spots

For lunch and dinner consider these spots (some have been mentioned previously)…

  • Tacos La Salsa this hidden gem is beloved among locals for its authentic, no-frills ambiance and standout salsas. Picture a vibrant, colorful taquería staffed by friendly faces preparing your tacos fresh to order. Expect mouthwatering fillings think al pastor, carne asada, and grilled shrimp. All served on warm handmade tortillas topped with a dazzling salsa bar and my personal favorite topping, pineapple.
  • Oystera the prettiest spot in town! Serving up fresh oysters, ceviche, and cocktails that basically taste like vacation.
  • Agricole Cocina de Campo is another gem. A bit outside of town and next to a market and bakery. They serve delicious seasonal dishes in the middle of the countryside that will have you wanting to come back for more.
  • Mini Super Munchies for those choosing to stay at Kimpton Mas Olas resort, this is your go-to spot for the morning! Offering delicious handmade breakfast burritos, coffee, and tons of other snacks. We loved chatting with the owner of this spot it’s located right next to the resort 🙂

Palapa cabanas at Kimpton Mas Olas

There’s no shortage of beautiful places to stay in Todos Santos — whether you’re looking for boutique charm, modern design, or a splash of luxury with desert views.

Kimpton Mas Olas

For something fresh and beachfront, this is one of the newest properties in the area — and it doesn’t disappoint. With modern rooms, ocean-facing pools, and that signature Kimpton aesthetic, it’s ideal for travelers who want a mix of style and comfort with easy beach access. We personally stayed here and appreciated not only one stunning pool surrounded by cactus but the second pool on property with palapa cabanas felt as thought I was on an episode of White Lotus. Along with that, they have acres of stunning botanical gardens. You could easily book a trip to Todos Santos and not leave this resort. It’s THAT good. Book your stay here!

Todos Santos Boutique Hotel

If you’re looking to stay in the heart of downtown than this is the spot for you! It’s located right in the heart of town and blends colonial elegance with a touch of modern flair. It’s walkable to shops and restaurants, making it perfect if you want to be close to the action while still enjoying a peaceful stay. We were blown away by the gorgeous design and it’s part of the Small Luxury Hotel group which are always a pleasure to stay at. Book your stay here!

Paradero Todos Santos

If you’re craving something more immersive, Paradero is a boho dream. Set against a desert-meets-ocean backdrop, this architectural gem is all about wellness, connection to nature, and intentional design. Think outdoor soaking tubs, yoga under the stars, and sweeping views that feel straight out of a magazine. Book your stay here!
