A Complete Guide to Visiting Stowe Vermont in Fall

If you’ve been following Le Travel Style for a while, then you already know that we are huge fall enthusiasts over here. There’s just something magical about crisp mornings, vibrant foliage, cozy cafes, and the smell of fresh cider in the air. And when it comes to experiencing all of that and more, there’s no better place than Stowe, Vermont.

Nestled in the heart of New England, Stowe is the kind of town that looks like it was made for autumn and plucked right out of a storybook. Picture rolling mountains painted in fiery shades of red and orange, a quaint downtown filled with boutiques and general stores, and endless outdoor adventures right at your doorstep. It’s a dream destination for leaf peepers, weekend wanderers, and anyone who craves a cozy fall getaway.

In this complete guide to visiting Stowe in the fall, I’m sharing everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip. From must-see foliage spots and scenic drives, to where to stay, what to eat, and how to spend two perfect days soaking up all that this storybook town has to offer. Let’s dive in!

Why Visit Stowe in the Fall?

There’s truly no better time to visit Stowe than in the fall. Peak foliage usually hits between late September and mid-October, turning the mountains into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and golds. It’s the kind of beauty that stops you in your tracks and has you pulling over every few miles for “just one more photo.”

Beyond the jaw-dropping views, fall in Stowe brings all the seasonal magic: scenic drives through Smugglers’ Notch, crisp air perfect for cozy sweaters, visits to local farms and cider mills, and charming festivals that celebrate everything we love about autumn. The vibe is peaceful but still a bit crowded. However it is less crowded than summer. Add in that signature New England charm (think covered bridges, country stores, and cozy inns), and it’s easy to see why Stowe tops the list for the ultimate fall escape.

While all opinions and recommendations are always my own, my content on this blog post may contain affiliate links for hotels I’ve traveled to, tours I’ve completed, and products I recommend. This means I get a small commission (at no additional cost to you) if you book a stay or purchase a product after clicking one of these links. How to Get to Stowe

Getting to Stowe is part of the adventure—especially if you’re visiting during peak foliage season. We drove in from New Hampshire and the two-hour drive was absolutely stunning, with winding roads and bursts of fall color around every bend.

If you’re flying in, the closest airport is Burlington International Airport (BTV). Which is just a 45-minute drive from Stowe. From there, you’ll definitely want to rent a car to explore the area since public transit is limited. Also, part of the charm of Stowe is being able to hop in the car for spontaneous leaf-peeping adventures.

If you’re coming from a major city, here are a few helpful drive times:

  • Boston to Stowe: 3.5 hours
  • New York City to Stowe: 6 hours
  • Montreal to Stowe: 2.5 hours

No matter where you’re coming from, I recommend renting a car so you can truly experience the scenic backroads, local farms, and hidden gems that make Stowe so special in the fall!

Tips for Visiting Stowe in the Fall

If you’re planning a fall getaway to Stowe, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind to make the most of your trip. First and foremost, timing is everything. Peak foliage in Vermont typically hits between early to mid-October, but it can vary year to year depending on weather patterns.

I always recommend using tools like the Vermont Fall Foliage Report or the Foliage Tracker on NewEngland.com to keep an eye on the color progression. It’s such a helpful resource for planning your trip around the most vibrant views! We visited the first week in October in 2024 and were met with perfect foliage conditions.

Because fall is one of Stowe’s most popular seasons, be sure to book your accommodations and dinner reservations well in advance. Hotels and top restaurants fill up quickly, especially on weekends.

As for what to pack: layers are key. Mornings and evenings can get pretty chilly, even when the sun is out during the day. Don’t forget to bring comfortable hiking shoes, a camera (or phone with lots of storage—you’ll be snapping photos nonstop), and offline maps if you plan on exploring the backroads or hiking trails, since cell service can be spotty in more remote areas. Trust me, a little prep goes a long way and Stowe in the fall is so worth it.

Where to Stay in Stowe

Stowe is filled with charming places to stay, and in true Le Travel Style fashion, I always lean toward spots that offer both comfort and character. Especially during fall when you just want to cozy up with a warm coffee or tea after a day of leaf peeping.

Charming Inns & B&Bs
If you’re looking for that quintessential New England charm, The Green Mountain Inn is a classic. It’s right in the heart of Stowe Village, so you’re just steps away from shops, restaurants, and that postcard-perfect Main Street. Book your stay here!

For something more intimate and luxurious, Stone Hill Inn is a romantic, adults-only B&B tucked away in the woods. It’s peaceful, cozy, and has the dreamiest fall vibes. Book your stay here!

Boutique Hotels
If you prefer something a bit more modern with a design-forward twist, Field Guide Lodge is one of my favorites. It’s stylish, playful, and super Instagram-worthy. Book your stay here!

Cabins & Vacation Rentals
For a truly secluded fall escape, nothing beats a cozy cabin or cottage tucked away in the trees. There are tons of great rentals in and around Stowe that give you that “cabin in the woods” feeling while still being close enough to all the action. It’s the perfect option if you’re traveling with a group or want to make your own meals using local Vermont goodies.

Pro Tip: Fall is Stowe’s busiest season, so I highly recommend booking your stay early. Especially if you’re planning a trip during peak foliage. We booked 4 months out and felt like our options we slim. The best spots fill up quickly!

Best Things to Do in Stowe in the Fall

Endless views of fall foliage at Mount Mansfield

Drive or Hike Mount Mansfield

Mount Mansfield is Vermont’s highest peak and a must visit during fall. Whether you drive the Auto Toll Road (which costs $37 per car and is a 4.5 mile drive) or hike one of the scenic trails, the panoramic views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. Especially when the mountains are glowing in shades of red, orange, and gold. It’s the perfect spot for those iconic fall photos!

Go on a Hike or Bike the Stowe Recreation Path

This 5.3-mile paved path is one of my favorite ways to soak in the beauty of Stowe. It winds through colorful forests, open fields, and over charming wooden bridges. Whether you’re walking or biking, it’s such a peaceful way to experience the foliage (and great for stopping at local farm stands along the way). The trail starts right in the heart of town and there is plenty of free parking options.

Another favorite hike of ours was the Barnes Camp Boardwalk hike. It was an easy 1.4 mile loop trail that went through a stunning forest boasting with fall colors. It can be quite steep incline after crossing the river (make sure to wear waterproof hiking boots). This hike is perfect for all hiking types.

Take the Scenic Drive Through Smugglers’ Notch

If you love a good fall foliage drive, Smugglers’ Notch is the route to take. With narrow, winding roads and dramatic rock faces, this drive is equal parts stunning and thrilling. It’s especially magical in the morning when the fog settles between the trees and there are less people on the roads. Try and steer clear of this drive mid-day. Your best options will be early in the morning or for golden hour.

Visit Cold Hollow Cider Mill

cider and donuts at the cold hollow cider mill

Nothing says fall like fresh cider donuts, and Cold Hollow does them right. They are crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside. The perfect combination! They also offer hard cider tastings, fun fall goods, and plenty of cozy vibes. It’s one of those places that smells like autumn the moment you walk in.

We visited on a busy Sunday morning, and unfortunately, they were out of hot cider. Major fall heartbreak. We still tried the cold cider, which was refreshing, but let’s be honest… it just doesn’t hit the same on a crisp autumn day. A little reminder that travel isn’t always picture-perfect, and that’s okay! Also, just a heads-up: some of the prices in the shop might catch you off guard. We spotted a small bag of chocolates priced around $30. And as much as we love chocolate, we’re not sure we love it that much.

Explore Stowe Village

fall foliage views at Stowe Church viewpoint

Downtown Stowe is full of small-town charm. Spend time browsing the cute boutiques, sipping a latte from a local coffee shop, and snapping a photo of the iconic white church. Some favorite small shops to check out would be Shaw’s General Store for classic Vermont maple syrup to bring home, The Country Store on Main, and Black Cap Coffee.

The best view of the church is from the Salon Salon parking lot. It can get quite hectic as the secret is out for the most photo worthy shot. During the 2024 season, the iconic church in Stowe was under construction, with scaffolding covering its signature steeple. Definitely a bit of a bummer for anyone hoping to snap that classic photo. I imagine the work will be wrapped up by the 2025 season.

But hey, just another reminder that travel doesn’t always go according to plan—and honestly, that’s part of the adventure, right? Even so, Stowe is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, soak it all in, and appreciate the charm that’s around every corner!

Take a Day Trip to Woodstock

charming town of Woodstock Vermont

If you have a little extra time, a day trip to Woodstock, Vermont is 100% worth it. This charming town is only about an hour and a half away and offers more dreamy foliage, covered bridges, and New England charm. It’s basically fall heaven for all my fellow fall enthusiasts. I can best describe it as Stars Hollow. It truly feels like stepping into an episode of Gilmore Girls with the Woodstock Inn front and center in town.

A few other spots to check out are Mon Vert Cafe, Taftsville covered bridge, and the most picture perfect fall street, Pleasant Street, with the perfect white picket fence and pumpkins lining it. Finally, we had a delicious lunch at The Village Butcher but they do have limited seating so plan to take it to go 🙂

Visit the Ben & Jerry’s Factory (Waterbury)

You can’t visit Vermont without stopping at the original Ben & Jerry’s factory in Waterbury. If you’re an ice cream lover that is! It’s just a short 20 minute drive from Stowe. It’s a fun, quirky stop and a great excuse to enjoy a scoop (or two) of your favorite flavor.

Tour Stowe’s Covered Bridges

What is New England charm without a covered bridge? Am I right? Stowe is home to some picture-perfect covered bridges that come alive in the fall. Gold Brook Bridge—also known as Emily’s Bridge—is a favorite with some spooky folklore attached. Apparently it is haunted by a ghost name Emily so beware when visiting. Others like Brookdale Bridge are just as charming and great for photos.

Go Leaf Peeping on a Gondola Ride

signage at Stowe Mountain Resort at the base of the mountain

For a fresh perspective on fall foliage, hopping on the gondola at Stowe Mountain Resort is definitely worth considering. It whisks you up Mount Mansfield, offering sweeping, peaceful views of the vibrant autumn landscape below—perfect if you want the payoff of a hike without the effort.

That said, it’s important to know a few things before you go: the prices can be steep ($40 for adults, $26 for kids), and on busy fall days, the lines can get long. Couples should also be prepared to share the gondola with others, and once you reach the top, you can either tackle the massive hill on foot or wait for the gondola ride back down.

Honestly, while the views were absolutely stunning and I’ve got photos I’ll treasure forever, the experience itself wasn’t my favorite fall memory. It just didn’t feel as relaxing or fun as I’d hoped. Still, if you’re short on time or hiking isn’t your thing, it’s a beautiful way to soak up those iconic Vermont colors.

Visit the Trapp Family Lodge

bakery on the Von Trapp Lodge property

The Austrian-inspired Trapp Family Lodge (yes, the same family from The Sound of Music) is packed with history, charm, and stunning mountain vibes. You can spend your day exploring scenic trails, enjoying a craft beer at their on-site brewery, and soaking in incredible views in the crisp fall air when the leaves are at their absolute peak.

Just near the lobby, you’ll spot a field full of the cutest lambs grazing peacefully on a hillside—a total heart-melter. Right across from that little scene is a hidden gem that many visitors seem to miss: the Von Trapp Lodge Bakery also known as a Kaffeehaus. While most folks head to the brewery (which can get pretty lively on weekends), this cozy cafe is a quiet treasure. We stumbled upon it by chance and loved relaxing there with fresh coffee, delicious sweet pastries, and a tasty lunch. All with the most incredible views! Definitely a must-try spot to recharge during your fall adventures if you need a break from the crowds.

Check Out Fall Festivals & Local Events

Stowe knows how to celebrate the season. Depending on when you visit, you might catch Oktoberfests, harvest markets, or local art walks. These events are a great way to connect with the community and experience that classic Vermont hospitality.
