Best South of France destinations
There are two ways to plan a South of France itinerary. One option is to immerse yourself in the glamour of the French Riviera, exploring the dazzling towns along the CĂŽte d’Azur. The other is to embark on a scenic road trip through Provence, discovering its charming villages and world-renowned wineries. How to Get to the South of France: South of France Itinerary 7 days
For travelers flying in, Nice CĂŽte d’Azur Airport is the ideal spot to start and end your South of France adventure. If you’re coming from Italy, the train from Portofino to Nice Central Station is a scenic and convenient option. Upon reaching Nice, renting a car is highly recommended for your journey. While many towns are accessible by train, having a car offers the flexibility to explore at your own pace and to enjoy early morning visits to some of the region’s most charming destinations. Finally, do note that in most places on the Cote d’Azur, you have to pay for parking but the prices are reasonable.
Things to Know Before Traveling to the South of France
Transportation: Renting a car is the best approach, especially for the segments from Nice to Eze, Monaco, Cannes, and St. Tropez. Alternatively, trains and buses are also viable options. Finally, if you’re visiting during peak season (May-September) traffic may add more time to the travel times listed as many of the roads in South France are only two lanes.
Accommodation: For the first 2 days base yourself in Nice. From there we recommend 1 night in Menton, 1 night in Cannes, 1 night in St. Tropez, and then end your trip with another night in Nice. You can add on a few days if you’d like to visit Marseille and Provence. To experience both regions you truly need 2 weeks as it’s so spread out. Finally, book your hotels in advance, particularly during peak tourist season. Read on for our hotel recommendations.
Currency + Tipping: The Euro is used in the South of France and it’s customary to round up your check a few dollars to tip for really great service.
Packing: Bring comfortable walking shoes, tons of bathing suits, and casual evening attire. The beaches in Nice are rocky so you’ll want to pack your waterproof sandals. The beaches in Cannes and St. Tropez are sandy so add those chic sandals. Finally, bathing suits are a packing essential for the French Riviera.
South of France Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Nice
Afternoon: Explore the Promenade des Anglais + Old Town (Vieux Nice)
For your first outing in Nice, head to the Promenade des Anglais, the city’s iconic waterfront avenue that hugs the stunning azure coastline. We truly have never seen water this blue – it is captivating! After your travel day, unwind at one of Nice’s numerous beach clubs, where you can relax in style. The beach clubs are a quintessential part of the South of France experience, with lounge chairs typically ranging from âŹ25 to âŹ35.
We visited Ruhl Plage and Opera Plage and they were both great. From your chair, you can order food and refreshments, soaking in the sun and the vibrant beach atmosphere. Furthermore, note that all the beaches in Nice are rocky so it’s best to invest in good water shoes (these are our go-to waterproof sandals).
Next, stroll over to Vieux Nice, the charming old town with its colorful, ancient buildings and lively markets. This area offers endless dining possibilities, and we highly recommend La Favola, a local favorite. Despite the 20-minute wait, the delicious cuisine made it well worth it. Finally, don’t miss the Cours Saleya Market, a delightful flower market that’s perfect for a leisurely stop and some picturesque photos.
Evening: Dinner at a local Restaurant on the Sea
Consider dining at Le Galet, an exceptional beachfront restaurant known for its incredible white pizzasâthe best we’ve tasted on this trip! The atmosphere was vibrant and lively, and we didn’t have to wait long for a table. While waiting, you can relax in their cozy lounge area with comfortable couches, where you can order drinks and enjoy the ambiance. Finally, the sunset was stunning and to witness that clear blue water with a pink sky was otherworldly.

AIRBNB Pick: This AIRBNB is located in a great area and is very comfortable for two travelers with modern updates. It even includes a small balcony in which you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
Day 2: Nice to Eze to Monaco
Morning: Drive to Eze
The enchanting town of Eze is a must-see in your Southern France Itinerary. Ăze is a picturesque medieval village perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, renowned for its stunning views and enchanting atmosphere. With a history dating back to the 12th century, Ăze has been a strategic site for various civilizations, including the Phoenicians and the Romans. The village’s narrow, winding streets are lined with ancient stone buildings, boasting greenery, and leading up to the Jardin Exotique. A beautiful botanical garden offering panoramic vistas that took our breath away.
The drive to Ăze takes approximately 30 minutes from Nice, so it’s best to start your day trip early due to limited parking in the town. When arriving at 8 AM, we found plenty of parking options, but by the time we left at 10:30 AM, all the spots were taken. Le Jardin Exotique opens at 9 am and costs âŹ8 to enter.
Additionally, the town is quite small and can be explored within an hour or two, so you wonât need much time. Since it’s also very hilly, be sure to wear comfortable shoes. If you wish to extend your visit, consider having lunch at ChĂąteau Eze, where you can enjoy stunning views alongside a delightful meal. We attempted to visit for breakfast but were informed that it is only available to guests.
Afternoon: Continue to Monaco
After exploring the charm of Ăze, head to Monaco for an afternoon filled with luxury and glamour. The short drive from Ăze to Monaco (25 minutes) offers stunning coastal views.
Did you know that Monaco is the smallest country in the world? Smallest and definitely the most luxurious – the shops, restaurants, and hotels here are the epitome of high-end. Begin your visit with some high-end shopping at the designer boutiques in Monte Carlo. If you have time consider shopping vintage in Monaco being that 1 in 3 people that live here are millionaires so it’s more than likely you’ll score big time with great second-hand pieces.
Next, treat yourself to a glass of Veuve Clicquot at their chic pop-up bar, perfect for soaking in the opulent atmosphere. We especially loved how it was located in a square so it made for prime people watching. Continue your afternoon at Nikki Beach, an exclusive beach club known for its vibrant ambiance, stylish pool, and premium cocktails. They have locations all over the world and while they are known to be chic and popular, it is extremely pricey. However, the views from the rooftop make up for it.
Evening: Dinner in Monte Carlo
End your day with a visit to the iconic Monte Carlo Casino, where you can marvel at its exquisite Belle Ăpoque architecture and immerse yourself in its legendary allure. While there is a âŹ20 fee to enter the actual casino, you can freely explore the lobby area. For dinner, consider dining at Pavyllon Monte-Carlo, with the prettiest water views and a Michelin star. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of luxury and exploration. Finally, when driving back to Nice take the toll road as it’ll shave off 15-20 minutes and only costs a few euros.
Day 3: Nice to Menton
Morning: Travel to Menton, Beach, + Pastries
It’s time to head to one of Europe’s most colorful towns! The drive from Nice takes about 40 minutes. Plan to arrive by mid-morning. For accommodations, staying in Old Town places you within walking distance of Menton’s main attractions, enhancing your experience of this picturesque gem on the French Riviera. Hereâs our recommended hotel!
Menton is situated on the Italy/France border. Dubbed the “Pearl of France,” Menton is one of the Cote d’Azur hidden gems with its charming old town adorned with pastel-colored buildings, winding cobblestone streets, and bustling markets. Our long-awaited visit confirmed its vibrant reputation.
Its mild climate ensures visitors year-round, offering a mix of cultural heritage and a laid-back seaside ambiance. The expansive beaches, stretching along the azure waters, add to its allure, making it a perfect destination for couples and famiilies in search of relaxation and exploration.
Upon arrival in Menton, start your journey by unwinding at Plage des Sablettes, where you can relax and soak in the Mediterranean atmosphere. Grab some lunch and pastries at Boulangerie Patisserie Switzerland on your way to the beach. For the best panoramic views of the village, make your way to Quai ImpĂ©ratrice EugĂ©nie near the port (where the above photo was taken). Look for a stone staircase that seamlessly blends into a wall. Once you ascend the staircase, head left and navigate across some rocks to reach this spectacular viewpoint. It’s a manageable climb, but be sure to wear suitable footwear for comfort and safety.
Afternoon: Explore the Old Town
Exploring Old Town Menton is a journey through history and charm, where centuries-old churches and picturesque streets beckon visitors to wander and discover. The heart of the old town is graced by the stunning Basilique Saint Michel Archange. Its ornate facade is stunning and the steps leading up to the church offer a stunning architectural perspective. It’s truly a work of art.
As you stroll through the charming cobblestone streets past the church, you’ll encounter quaint pastel-colored homes, artisan shops, and bustling markets. The streets pictured above are located on Rue de la Conception so pop that into your map to reach this charming alley. Furthermore, a visit to the Jean Cocteau Museum or a stroll through the Val Rahmeh-Menton Botanical Garden are great things to do in Menton.
Evening: Sunset and dinner
Menton offers an abundance of seaside restaurants with stunning views of the water. One standout is Primo Atelier Della Pasta, where we enjoyed a delicious meal while taking in breathtaking beach views. Especially at sunset. After dining, treat yourself to gelato from Tutti Frutti. For lavender enthusiasts, the lavender or cassis gelato is a must-try, as these are their specialties.
Day 4: Menton to Antibes to Cannes
Morning + Afternoon: Travel to Antibes and Explore
Driving from Menton to Antibes offers a scenic journey along the French Riviera. It takes roughly an hour and a half. As you arrive in Antibes, you’ll find a ton of activities to fill your day trips. Start by exploring the historic Old Town, with its narrow cobblestone streets, vibrant markets, and charming boutiques. Visit the Picasso Museum, housed in the ChĂąteau Grimaldi, to admire an extensive collection of the artist’s works.
Stroll along the picturesque Port Vauban, one of the largest marinas in Europe, and marvel at the luxurious yachts. And if you’re an outdoor enthusiast don’t miss a visit to the stunning Cap d’Antibes peninsula, where you can hike along the coastal trails or relax on the serene beaches. Finally, end your Antibes trip with a leisurely lunch at one of the many seaside restaurants, enjoying fresh Mediterranean cuisine with a view of the sparkling sea.
Alternatively, you can visit the medieval town of Saint Paul de Vence instead of Antibes. For beach lovers, Antibes is the ideal choice, while those who enjoy charming, storybook towns will find Saint Paul de Vence enchanting. Either destination will make a wonderful addition to your 7-day South of France itinerary and is on the way to Cannes.
Evening: Explore Cannes
Cannes is just a 25-minute drive from Antibes. Out of our entire 7-day itinerary, Cannes was our least favorite town. Therefore, itâs best to spend only an evening here, or consider staying in Antibes or Saint Paul de Vence instead. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and head out to explore. Begin with a leisurely walk along La Croisette, the famous promenade lined with luxury shops, elegant hotels, and stunning views of the Mediterranean.
Next, choose a seaside restaurant for an epic dining experience. We had a delicious dinner at Annex Beach Club, which is currently themed by Roberto Cavalli. The venue boasts stylish decor, located right on the water, and a DJ spinning tunes throughout the evening, adding to the lively atmosphere. Another popular place to dine in Cannes is La Mome.
As the sun sets, explore Le Suquet, the charming Old Town, with its narrow, winding streets, quaint shops, and delightful restaurants. Enjoy an evening cocktail at a cozy bistro and take in the panoramic views of Cannes and the sparkling sea from this historic hilltop district. Here is our hotel recommendation for the evening.
Day 5: Cannes to St. Tropez
Morning: Drive to St. Tropez Breakfast at Dior Cafe
St. Tropez, with its undeniable charm and allure, is a must-visit destination on the French Riviera. This charming town was a favorite of ours during our trip. Not only do you have the prettiest streets boasting with charm but the amount of picture-perfect shops and restaurants here are endless. With all that said, it was also the most expensive place during our stay so be prepared for NYC prices!
Start your day with a luxurious breakfast at the Dior Café, where you can savor exquisite pastries and gourmet coffee in an elegant setting inspired by the iconic fashion house. Truly, the prettiest restaurant we arrived at 10:30 am on a Saturday without a reservation and were seated fairly quickly. However, we recommend booking a reservation in advance if you can.
After breakfast, wander through the quaint streets of the Old Town, discovering boutique shops, art galleries, and vibrant markets. On Saturday there is a market with vendors selling everything from vintage designer pieces to home goods to art prints. It was lovely! Finally, visit the Vieux Port, where you can admire the array of glamorous yachts. Donât miss the chance to relax on one of St. Tropezâs famous beaches, such as Pampelonne, or explore the scenic coastal trails.
Afternoon: Gigi Restaurant and Beach Club
Gigi Restaurants offers a truly immersive dining experience, with multiple locations across France, and their St. Tropez venue is particularly enchanting. Upon arrival, valet your car (for âŹ15) and enjoy a short golf cart ride to the restaurant. The setting feels like a jungle paradise, blending the vibes of Tulum and the Hamptons.
While dining, you can enjoy live music and stay as long as you like. And believe me, you will want to with this chic atmosphere. We spent several hours here, and the staff was consistently gracious and attentive. Try the Rigatoni al Pomodoro or the truffle pasta. We highly recommend this experience.
Additionally, Gigiâs features a tranquil pool club where you can rent chairs and relax, soaking in the beauty of this serene space. Next, check into your hotel as you’ll be staying overnight in St. Tropez. Here is our hotel pick for the evening!
Evening: Enjoy the Nightlife
Next, head to L’Opera for an exquisite dinner. Indulge in gourmet cuisine while surrounded by elegant decor. It’s a unique experience in the heart of the Saint-Tropez village. Built as an arena, the restaurant mixes with refinement an exceptional gastronomy.
Finally, if you’re feeling up for a little nightlife St Tropez is known for that. You can start with a visit to Les Caves du Roy, a legendary nightclub known for its chic atmosphere and celebrity clientele. Or if you prefer a more laid-back vibe, head to Le Quai for late-night drinks. This stylish bar offers a chic setting with live music and a great selection of cocktails.
Day 6: St. Tropez to Nice
Morning: Beach + Pastries
Start your morning with the legendary bakery, La Tarte Tropézienne. They are known for their delectable pastries such as their signature Tarte Tropézienne. A creamy, sugary delight that pairs perfectly with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Next, spend a relaxing morning at one of the beaches in St. Tropez, such as Bouillabaisse Beach.
Afternoon: Visit a Winery
Next, take a short drive to ChĂąteau Barbeyrolles, a renowned vineyard known for its exceptional wines. Enjoy a guided tour and wine-tasting session, where you can savor some of the finest wines in the region. The chĂąteau’s picturesque setting and charming ambiance make it a perfect spot for a relaxing evening. We loved this place and they are open from 9 am to 7 pm on Monday through Saturday.
Evening: Dinner at Le Plongeoir Nice
The drive back to Nice takes approximately two hours from St. Tropez. Once arriving back in Nice check into your hotel and head to Le Plongeoir for dinner. This restaurant has an iconic backstory and is extremely popular in Nice. At the end of the nineteenth century, a stylish fishing boat was secured on the rock. During âLa Belle Ăpoqueâ, guests could eat and drink tea perched six meters above the waves. This restaurant, connected by a walkway to a charming gazebo typical of that era on the French Riviera, soon became emblematic of the city of Nice.
Today, although redesigned, this place remains an iconic dining destination and the name translates to The Diving Board. While you cannot jump off the three diving boards surrounding the restaurant it’s still an incredible dining experience. Be sure to sample menu highlights like the truffle pasta and roasted sea bass. Reservations are a must, so plan and book your table weeks in advance to secure your spot.
Day 7: Nice
Morning: Visit Castle Hill
Start your morning with B Baker Patisserie a legendary boulangerie in Nice. Next, start your ascent to the top of Castle Hill (another reason why a car comes in handy). Which offers a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and panoramic views., where remnants of ancient forts and ruins await, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich past. As you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the city of Nice, and the surrounding coastline.
One of the highlights of Castle Hill is the cascading waterfall, a serene oasis nestled amidst lush greenery. Take a stroll along the pathways leading to the waterfall, where you can relax in the shade and listen to the soothing sounds of the water gently flowing. It’s a perfect spot to unwind with a book for a few hours after a long week of traveling.
Afternoon: Saint Jean Cap Ferrat
Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is a stunning town located 30 minutes from Nice. Visiting Paloma Plage and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild offers a delightful combination of beach relaxation and cultural exploration. Start your day at Paloma Plage, a serene beach known for its clear turquoise waters and scenic views of the French Riviera coastline. Whether you choose to sunbathe, relax at the beach club, or swim in the refreshing Mediterranean Sea, Paloma Plage provides a tranquil escape. Make sure to wear proper shoes as the beach is quite rocky.
After an afternoon at the beach, continue to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a stunning Renaissance-style mansion surrounded by nine themed gardens. Explore the opulent interiors of the villa, adorned with priceless artworks, antique furniture, and intricate architecture. Stroll through the meticulously landscaped gardens, each designed to evoke different themes such as Spanish, Florentine, and Japanese influences. The parking lot closes when full so it’s best to visit either first in the morning or right before they close at 7 pm.
Optional Day 8/9: Marseille
If you’re extending your one week trip and considering adding one to two days, Marseille is an excellent choice. A must-do in Marseille is exploring the Calanques National Park, where the deep blue waters against the rugged cliffs create breathtaking scenery. Don’t miss the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde for panoramic views of the city and the sea, as well as the MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) and Fort Saint-Jean for a dose of history and culture.
