10 Perfect Spots to Experience Fall in New Hampshire

When it comes to chasing fall foliage, New Hampshire is one of the most magical places to be. Every September and October, the state transforms into a canvas of fiery reds, golden yellows, and bright oranges. Out of all the places we visited on our 8 day New England Fall Roadtrip, New Hampshire felt the most like fall. From scenic drives through the White Mountains to charming small-town gems, New Hampshire offers some of the best leaf-peeping in all of New England.

We were lucky enough to experience peak foliage during October 1st-3rd, 2024. Do note, it fluctuates year by year but if you plan this trip for the beginning of October you’ll more than likely experience foliage. Kancamagus Highway

No trip to New Hampshire in the fall is complete without a drive along the famous Kancamagus Highway. Known as “The Kanc” by locals, this 34-mile scenic byway runs through the White Mountain National Forest and is lined with breathtaking overlooks, hiking trails, and cascading waterfalls. Plan your drive for peak foliage season in early to mid-October to witness the mountains ablaze with color.

We visited last year during the first week of October and experienced peak foliage. While we didn’t have it mirrored with blue skies it was still an epic experience! We were able to knock off most of the highway in one day.

Best Stops along “The Kanc”

Albany Covered Bridge: If you love charming New England bridges, the Albany Covered Bridge is a must-see along the Kancamagus Highway. Built in 1858, this wooden bridge stretches across the Swift River and looks straight out of a postcard in the fall. For this epic view cross the bridge and head to the right. The fiery foliage reflecting on the water makes it a dreamy photography spot. Parking is available for $5, and it’s a quick and easy stop to stretch your legs during your scenic drive.

Rocky Gorge: Just a short drive from Albany Covered Bridge, Rocky Gorge is another iconic stop on the Kanc. Here, the Swift River flows through a narrow gorge, creating dramatic cascades that are especially stunning framed by autumn leaves. A footbridge crosses the gorge, offering incredible views and photo opportunities. Parking here is also $5, and it’s an easy walk to the overlook.

Sabbaday Falls: One of the most popular waterfalls along the Kancamagus Highway is Sabbaday Falls, and for good reason. This three-tiered waterfall is reached via a short and easy 0.7-mile trail, making it perfect for families or a quick foliage hike. In the fall, the surrounding trees light up with color, creating a magical setting for the falls. The best part? Entry is free, so you can enjoy this little slice of nature without spending a dime.

Franconia Notch State Park

Located in the heart of the White Mountains, Franconia Notch State Park is a must-visit in the fall. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, the park is home to Echo Lake, Flume Gorge, and the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway ($25pp), which offers sweeping views of the colorful valleys below. Whether you prefer hiking, photography, or just soaking in the scenery, Franconia delivers it all.

The Red Covered bridge is the most photographed, and don’t get me wrong it’s the perfect fall photo, but there is so much more to explore here! Plan on spending a few hours hiking around and taking in all the beautiful fall colors. Make sure to book your time slot in advance ($18pp) and opt for the first available time during the day for less crowds.

Artist Bluff Trail

Artists Bluff Hike

One of the most photographed fall views in New Hampshire is found on the Artist Bluff Trail. This short, steep, but rewarding hike leads to a lookout point with panoramic views of Echo Lake framed by mountains bursting with fall foliage. It truly took our breath away!

If you want to visit for sunset make sure to start the hike an hour before so you have time to make it up. It’s quite strenuous so I would recommend taking the easier route which is clockwise from the parking lot. Once you hit the sign that says bald mountain head to the right, hike another 20 minutes, and you can’t miss it. Finally, be careful on the way down as there is some rock climbing.

Lumen Nature Retreat

For a unique fall getaway, book a stay at Lumen Nature Retreat, a Scandinavian-inspired glamping destination tucked in the White Mountains. Imagine cozying up in a cabin or A-frame with floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to a forest of fall color perfect with a cozy fireplace?! It’s the ultimate way to combine comfort with leaf-peeping adventures.

This riverside retreat offers two soothing saunas, a beautifully renovated shared bathroom (cabins do not include private bathrooms), lawn games for leisurely afternoons, and firewood available for purchase for cozy nights by the fire. Surrounded by nature’s calm, it’s the perfect sanctuary to slow down, recharge, and immerse yourself in peaceful moments. Book your stay and experience the serenity!

White Mountains

The White Mountains are truly the crown jewel of New Hampshire in the fall. Spanning across much of the state, this region offers endless opportunities to chase foliage. Hike one of the many scenic trails, take a gondola ride at Bretton Woods or Loon Mountain, or simply admire the vibrant leaves from a quiet overlook.

Don’t miss a drive up the Mount Washington Auto Road. Where sweeping views stretch as far as the eye can see. Every corner feels like a postcard, and a visit to the iconic Omni Mount Washington Resort is the perfect way to round out your trip.

St Matthews Chapel

For a picture-perfect fall scene, head to St. Matthew’s Chapel in the quaint town of Sugar Hill. This tiny white chapel, set against a backdrop of fiery red and orange leaves, looks like something out of a storybook. Along the drive there are a few photo-worthy farms to marvel at. All in all, it’s a peaceful stop where you can take in the charm of small-town New Hampshire in the fall.

Conway Scenic Train

Step back in time with a ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad, which offers fall foliage train tours through the White Mountains. The vintage railcars take you past rivers, valleys, and mountain views you can’t see from the road. Opt for the Mountaineer excursion for the most dramatic fall landscapes.

Experiencing fall in New Hampshire is like stepping into a real-life painting. From scenic drives along the Kancamagus Highway to peaceful chapels tucked away in small towns, every stop offers something special. Whether you’re hiking, road-tripping, or cozying up in a cabin, New Hampshire is one of the best places in New England to soak in autumn’s beauty. You can book your tickets here and make sure to as soon as possible!

There’s truly nothing like fall in New Hampshire. From scenic drives along the Kancamagus Highway to peaceful stops at hidden gems like St. Matthew’s Chapel and Albany Covered Bridge, every corner of the state feels like it was made for autumn. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls at Sabbaday Falls, hiking the iconic Artist Bluff Trail, or cozying up at Lumen Nature Retreat, New Hampshire delivers some of the most unforgettable foliage experiences in all of New England.

If you’re planning a leaf-peeping road trip, be sure to add these stops to your list. And don’t forget—peak foliage is short-lived, so timing your visit is key. No matter when you go, the mix of crisp mountain air, vibrant colors, and classic New England charm will leave you falling in love with New Hampshire every autumn.
