What to Wear in San Diego: The Ultimate Packing Guide from a Local

Are you heading to San Diego soon and wondering what to wear? Well, you’re in luck because your girl has lived in San Diego for 16+ years, and am ready to share all the best San Diego packing advice. Whether you plan on visiting the world-famous San Diego Zoo, one of the 30 miles of beaches, visiting the famous Balboa Park, or just relaxing and hanging by the pool, I’m here to curate your San Diego vacation wardrobe. To make your trip planning easier, I’ve put together a comprehensive San Diego packing list to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and stylish visit.

When visiting San Diego, you want to emulate the San Diego style which is effortlessly cool. San Diego is the ultimate beach town so most everything is casual. However, San Diego has some of the most expensive zip codes in the country so certain parts of town can be more elevated in fashion (La Jolla mainly). The perfect southern California uniform is denim shorts, sandals, a white button-down, and a fedora. For a night out, a nice dress, neutral heels, and slide sandals. Below I’ll be sharing everything you need in order to visit America’s Finest City in style baby!

San Diego Weather

Since San Diego is a coastal city, you want to remember to always pack a light jacket year-round. The temperature always drops at night and a jacket always comes in handy. Along with that, you don’t have to worry about humid temperates in the summer (aside from 1-2 weeks in August). However, in San Diego, we do have something the locals call “May Gray” and “June Gloom”. Many tourists believe that those are great months to visit and while they can be, both of those months are very overcast. Keep that in mind when planning your trip. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before your trip to San Diego, as the climate can vary significantly across different areas of the city.

For the best times to visit, I would choose September/October or April/November when you can enjoy warmer temperatures and fewer crowds. Finally, if you want to experience a quiet and empty San Diego visit in January-February. It’s a bit cold but never really drops below 50.

San Diego Packing List

One of my organization tips when it comes to packing is to categorize your clothes beforehand. For example, put all your shorts in one pile, all your dresses in one pile, etc. This makes it easy to eliminate and add to your packing list. Along with that, packing cubes are a lifesaver! This helps to keep your items together and you can easily pop them into the hotel dresser drawer when you arrive. Unpacking has never been easier!

San Diego style is all about embracing a laid-back, effortlessly cool vibe. Think casual yet chic, with a focus on comfort and practicality. The city’s coastal location and mild climate mean that lightweight, breathable fabrics are a must. Whether you’re strolling through Balboa Park, hitting the beach, or enjoying a night out in the Gaslamp Quarter, you’ll want to look stylish without sacrificing comfort.

For daytime outings, consider pairing denim shorts with a breezy white button-down shirt and a wide-brimmed sun hat. This classic combination is perfect for exploring the city’s many outdoor attractions. When the sun sets and the temperature drops, a light jacket or chic blazer will keep you warm without weighing you down.

San Diego’s nightlife is equally relaxed, but you can elevate your look with a nice dress and neutral heels. Opt for versatile pieces that can transition seamlessly from day to night, allowing you to make the most of your time in America’s Finest City.

Clothing to Pack

I’ve curated this packing list for a 3/4 day trip. If you plan on staying longer, you can simply increase the quantity of clothing based off how many days you’re visiting.

  • 2 pairs of shorts (one denim, one linen)
    • these denim shorts are my go-to and are so classic and not too short
    • I also love linen shorts because they fit so many body types well
  • 1 mini or maxi skirt
  • 1 maxi dress
  • 2-3 casual day dresses
  • 2 bathing suits
    • I always find the best bathing suits from Summersalt and this Hunza G one-piece has an incredible fit that is so flattering

  • 1-2 nice dresses for a fancy dinner
  • 1 pair of wide-legged beige pants
  • 1 nice blouse
  • 1 white button-down shirt

Footwear and Accessories

San Diego’s casual and relaxed style is reflected in its footwear and accessories. When it comes to footwear, San Diegans often opt for comfortable and practical options that can keep up with their active lifestyle. Here are some popular footwear options to consider:

  • Sneakers: A good pair of sneakers is a must-have for any San Diego visitor. Look for breathable and comfortable options that can handle the city’s mild climate and varied terrain. Whether you’re exploring the urban streets or hiking in Torrey Pines State Park, a reliable pair of sneakers will keep your feet happy.
  • Sandals: San Diego’s beaches and outdoor spaces make sandals a popular choice. Opt for comfortable and supportive sandals that can handle the city’s rugged terrain. Sandals are perfect for a day at the beach or a casual stroll along the boardwalk.
  • Flip-flops: Flip-flops are a staple in San Diego’s footwear scene. Look for comfortable and durable options that can handle the city’s beach activities. They’re easy to slip on and off, making them ideal for spontaneous beach trips or lounging by the pool.

When it comes to accessories, San Diegans often opt for practical and functional options that can complement their casual style. Here are some popular accessories to consider:

  • Hats: A good hat can provide protection from the sun and add a stylish touch to any outfit. Look for breathable and comfortable options that can handle San Diego’s mild climate. A wide-brimmed sun hat is perfect for beach days, while a baseball cap is great for more active pursuits.
  • Sunglasses: San Diego’s sunny climate makes sunglasses a must-have accessory. Look for stylish sunglasses that fit every face shape, great. Stylish and functional, a good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes and complete your look.
  • Scarves: A lightweight scarf can add a stylish touch to any outfit and provide protection from the sun. Look for breathable and comfortable options that can handle San Diego’s mild climate. A scarf can also come in handy during cooler evenings or breezy coastal walks.

When packing for San Diego, it’s essential to consider the city’s mild climate and outdoor activities. Here are some miscellaneous items to include in your packing list:

  • Reusable water bottle: San Diego’s outdoor activities make a reusable water bottle a must-have accessory. Look for collapsible and leak-proof options that can handle the city’s rugged terrain. Staying hydrated is key, especially when you’re out exploring in the sun.
  • Beach towel: A lightweight beach towel can provide comfort and convenience during San Diego’s beach activities. Look for quick-drying and compact options that can handle the city’s mild climate. A good beach towel is essential for lounging on the sand or drying off after a dip in the Pacific Ocean.

  • Insect repellent: San Diego’s outdoor activities make insect repellent a must-have accessory. Look for DEET-free options that can protect from mosquitoes and other insects. This is especially important if you plan on hiking or spending time in nature.
