20 San Diego Hidden Gems: written by a local

San Diego is a city that truly has it all—stunning beaches, rich history, and countless attractions that draw visitors from all over the world. In recent years, it’s also become a foodie haven, with exciting culinary hotspots springing up across the county. It’s no wonder everyone dreams of experiencing that laid-back Southern California lifestyle, and honestly, who can blame them? But with San Diego’s popularity comes a few downsides—tourist crowds and long lines at top attractions.

However, what many people don’t realize is that San Diego is also home to some of California’s best-kept secrets, hiding in plain sight throughout the county. That’s where I come in! After calling San Diego home for almost 15 years, I’ve made it my mission to uncover the city’s hidden gems. From lesser-known beaches to off-the-beaten-path eateries and secluded parks, I’ve explored it all. In this guide, I’ll be sharing over 20 of San Diego’s most unique and undiscovered spots, so you can experience the city like a true local!

Shelter Island Japanese Friendship Bell

Japanese Friendship Bell in Shelter Island

Did you know that San Diego has a Japanese Friendship Bell? Well, I didn’t either! The Yokohama Friendship Bell was commemorated in 1958 as part of the Centennial Celebration of formal relations between the USA and Japan. It also marks the establishment of the two sister cities: Yokohama and San Diego. You can tell from the above photo that the best time to visit is the golden hour for photography. Finally, the park across the street has stunning views of the San Diego skyline.

  • Located at 1401 Shelter Island Drive

Scripps Coastal Meander

One of my favorite hidden gems in San Diego has to be the Scripps Coastal Meander. This short wooden boardwalk may be small, but the views are next-level—think sweeping sights of the Scripps Pier and the stunning La Jolla coastline. It’s the perfect spot for a quick morning stroll, but if you visit after 5 PM, be sure to check out the building at the end (pictured above). Just a heads-up: it’s used for UCSD research during business hours, so exploring it earlier in the day can get you into trouble. But come sunset? It offers some of the most magical views in all of San Diego.

  • Free to Visit
  • Scripps Institution of Oceanography 9234-9218, La Jolla Shores Dr, La Jolla, CA 92037
  • If you Park on La Jolla Shores Drive cramp your wheels to the curb. They give out tickets like crazy!

La Jolla Hidden Bench

The La Jolla Hidden Bench is a local secret that is located North of the Scripps Coastal Meander. To access it, you need to locate the bridge going across La Jolla Shores Drive. Go down the staircase to the bottom level, and look for a brown wooden building. Behind there you’ll see a wooden step footpath situation walk up to it and you’ll spot the hidden bench. It has the same great views as the meander but is more secluded. This video goes into more detail!

La Jolla Secret Swings

There are a few secret swings scattered around La Jolla, and over the years, they’ve become somewhat of a San Diego legend. They’re not too hard to find… if you know where to look.

The swing pictured on the left is located at the south end of the Birch Aquarium parking lot. Look for a little path tucked between two bushes and follow it up a fairly steep hill—about 100 feet to the top. That’s where the swing usually hangs. Usually being the keyword. These swings have a habit of disappearing, so don’t be too bummed if it’s not there when you visit. (Last time I checked in February 2023, this one was sadly gone.)

The swing on the right used to be off the Coastal Trail Walk near La Jolla Shores. Once you spot the white pedestrian bridge, you’d climb over the left side and hike down the cliff. There was even a rope to help. The views from there were unreal, and if you were feeling extra adventurous, the trail could take you all the way down to the water. Unfortunately, as of February 2024, this swing (and the tree it was attached to) has been removed. Still, these spots are fun to explore, swing or not, and you never know when someone might put one back up!

Annie’s Canyon Hike

Did you know that San Diego has a slot canyon? Well, we do! It’s called Annies Canyon Hike and is located in Solana Beach. Annie’s Canyon Trail is a moderate 1.5-mile loop trail that takes hikers through a narrow slot canyon and up to a scenic overlook that offers views of the lagoon.

The trail is known for its unique geological formations, including sandstone cliffs and boulders that are millions of years old. The trail can be steep and rocky in places and requires a climb up a metal ladder at the end of the slot canyon. The slot canyon portion is short but it’s such a unique spot. It is hands down my favorite San Diego hidden gems. I go into more detail in this Instagram video. It has everything you need to know before visiting.

Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave

Image gallery image

Located in a gift shop called “The Cave Store” Sunny Jims Sea Cave is an old prohibition smugglers’ cave built in 1902. If you look at the cave you can see his nose on the left hence the name Sunny Jim. The Cave Store has been operating tours of the cave since 1905. Tours are self-guided and last approximately 15 minutes. There is a long staircase to access the cave and is quite tight and slippery. Finally, tours are operated daily from 9 am – 4:30 pm. Find out more information here.

  • Adults $10, Kids $6
  • Address: 1325 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, CA 92037

Harpers Topiary Garden

Harper’s Topiary Garden in Mission Hills feels like something straight out of Edward Scissorhands. The landscaping at this private home is seriously next level—think whimsical shapes, animals, and abstract figures all sculpted from greenery. It’s a true hidden gem and a testament to the homeowners’ creativity and dedication.

The best part? It’s completely free to visit! Just keep in mind that it’s located on a quiet residential street, so be respectful of the neighborhood when you stop by—keep noise down, don’t block driveways, and admire from the sidewalk. It’s a quirky little stop that’s well worth adding to your San Diego itinerary. Finally, the actual address is 3549 Union St, San Diego, CA 92103

Spruce Street Suspension Bridge

Suspension bridge in San Diego surrounded by greenery

The Spruce Street Suspension Bridge is one of those hidden gems in San Diego that feels like a mini adventure. Tucked away in the Bankers Hill/Mission Hills area, this pedestrian bridge was built back in 1912 and stretches across a stunning canyon 70 feet below.

As you walk across, don’t be surprised if it sways and bounces a little—it’s all part of the fun (and the thrill!). The views are beautiful, especially if you catch golden hour, and it’s a quick, free stop that’s also part of the popular “7 Bridges Hike.”

Address: W Spruce St, San Diego, CA 92103
Pro tip: The bridge does move as you walk—so if you’re not a fan of heights, just something to keep in mind!

Heritage Park

Heritage Park is a charming place that showcases the city’s history and architectural heritage. Located in the neighborhood of Old Town, Heritage Park is a historical park that features a collection of restored Victorian-era homes. The park is home to several meticulously restored buildings, including seven historic homes and other structures such as San Diego’s first synagogue and a blacksmith shop. These structures were relocated from other parts of San Diego and restored to their original glory, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s past. Finally, it’s free to visit!

Sunset Cliffs Open Ceiling Cave

One of those places that you have to see to believe. This massive sea cave is an incredible spot to check out. It’s extremely difficult to reach and can only be done during the negative tide. This article outlines how to get to the open ceiling cave. Before attempting to do so, make sure you are a skilled swimmer, have some rock climbing knowledge, and have the proper gear.

Sunset Cliffs Swing

girl swinging on sunset cliffs swing

As you can tell, we San Diegans have a thing with hidden swings. Half the fun in finding one of the hidden swings is searching for yourself. I guess you could call it a treasure hunt. The Sunset Cliffs swing is taken down the most among all the secret swings. However, I visited last in March 2024 and it was still intact. A hint for finding the swing is to park off of Lomaland Drive and look for the crooked tree. Happy hunting fam!

Coronado Sand Dunes

Image gallery image

Did you know there’s a hidden message tucked into the sand dunes at Coronado Beach? At first glance, they might just look like regular sand dunes lining the shore—but from a bird’s-eye view, they actually spell out “Coronado Beach” in giant letters!

This quirky landmark dates back to the 1980s when a city worker, tasked with cleaning up piles of seaweed, got creative. Instead of hauling it all away, he decided to shape the dunes into a message that would only be visible from above. It’s been a little San Diego secret ever since—and such a fun surprise if you happen to catch it from a drone or aerial shot!

So next time you’re walking the shoreline near the Hotel Del, take a look at those dunes with a little more curiosity—there’s a hidden story right under your feet. coronadotimes.com (above photo credit).

Balboa Park Japanese Friendship Garden

girl standing by small pond surrounded by cherry blossoms
Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park

The Japanese Friendship Garden is such a hidden gem in SD! This 12-acre garden within Balboa Park opened to the public in 1991. It’s another expression of the friendship between San Diego and its sister city Yokohama (the first being the friendship bell :)). The most popular time to visit the garden is during the Cherry Blossom Festival in March. It’s home to over 200 Cherry Blossom trees and is truly a magical experience if you can visit during that time. You can purchase tickets online here.

  • Tickets are $16 per person
  • Address: 2215 Pan American Rd E. San Diego, CA 92101
  • San Diego residents are free to enter every third Tuesday of the Month

Del Mar Bridge

Del Mar Bridge during June blooming with Sea Lavender

If you’re looking for a viewpoint that feels straight out of Big Sur, you have to check out the Sunset Seat trail in Del Mar. From this hidden gem of a spot, you’ll get a stunning view of the Del Mar Bridge, which bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Bixby Creek Bridge up north. Arched, coastal, and totally postcard-worthy. Plus, you’ll have sweeping views of Torrey Pines and the Pacific in the distance. It’s honestly one of the most underrated coastal views in San Diego.

If you time your visit just right, around late June, you’ll also catch the sea lavender in full bloom. It blankets the cliffs with pops of soft purple. It’s such a dreamy scene—perfect for golden hour or a peaceful evening walk.

Pro tip: You can park along the road near the trailhead, but make sure to pay at the pay station. We saw multiple people getting ticketed while we were there, so don’t skip that step! Trust me, the view is worth the short trek.

Balboa Park Cactus Garden

Tucked away behind the Balboa Park Club, the historic Old Cactus Garden is one of Balboa Park’s best-kept secrets. Originally developed in 1935 for the California Pacific International Exposition, this charming garden has stood the test of time and remains beautifully intact today.

You’ll find some of the largest and most unique succulents in the entire park here. From towering cacti, spiky agaves, and other desert plants that give the space a totally different vibe from the rest of the lush park. What makes this spot even more special is its elevated view of the iconic Cabrillo Bridge. Making it a peaceful and picturesque stop during your visit. I typically see lots of photographers here for engagement shoots 🙂

Another fun little surprise? The garden is home to a community of cats. You can often catch them lounging in the shade or weaving between the plants. They’re well cared for by local volunteers and add a quirky, unexpected charm to the space. It’s a quiet, under-the-radar spot that’s perfect for a quick escape from the crowds.

El Prado Courtyard

girl standing in courtyard with tiled fountain, string lights, and palm trees

Tucked away in Balboa Park, the El Prado Courtyard is truly one of those hidden gems you might miss if you’re not looking for it. But once you stumble upon it, you’ll be instantly drawn in by the charming Spanish-style architecture, twinkling string lights, and a beautiful tiled fountain that adds the perfect touch of serenity.

It’s the kind of spot that feels like a little escape from the busier parts of the park—perfect for a quiet moment, a cute photo op, or even a romantic dinner.

And speaking of dinner, the El Prado restaurant (formerly The Prado at Balboa Park) is a longtime favorite among San Diego locals. With its vibrant atmosphere and flavorful Mexican-inspired dishes. It’s a must-visit if you’re looking to enjoy a great meal in a truly picturesque setting.

Self Realization Fellowship in Encinitas

The Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas was founded back in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda and has since become a peaceful sanctuary for the community. It’s home to several stunning meditation gardens—perfect for prayer, study, or simply unwinding.

Wander through serene koi ponds, vibrant gardens, and lush greenery while soaking in sweeping views of the breathtaking Encinitas coastline. Best of all, visiting the gardens is completely free, and they’re open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

Whether you’re seeking a quiet moment or just want to connect with nature, this spot is a must-visit hidden treasure on the San Diego coast.

San Diego Hidden Gems: Encinitas Boat Houses

houses that are shaped as boats surrounded by beautiful landscape

The Encinitas Boat Houses are an Encinitas legend. They are small residential houses shaped like boats. They’re so unique and make for a perfect photo opportunity. These are private residences so please be respectful and visit during normal hours. If you walk a few blocks over you can visit H Street Park. Which has stunning views over the Encinitas cliffs.

  • Free to visit
  • 726 3rd St, Encinitas, CA

Robert’s Cottages in Oceanside

This charming historical landmark called “Roberts Cottages” is located in Oceanside directly across from the beach. They’re vintage beach homes that are all individually owned today. You feel as though you have stepped back into time when visiting here. especially if a vintage van drives by!

Currently, you can rent these cottages out but only for a 7-day minimum. Finally, it’s perfect for a cute photo moment or to just take a walk down memory lane.

Bankers Hill Mini Mansions

I love coming to this area and marveling at all the gorgeous homes or “mini-mansions” as San Diego likes to call them. They make for some incredible backdrops and the above photo is located at 435 W Thorn Ave. It’s the most perfect Italian-style villa of my dreams!
